(gb) wrote: A British guy trying to make a connection with the conservative Chinese mother of his deceased partner; the theme and the gloomy cinematography make you sad even before the story begins to unfold. Communication is the main problem over here. They somehow manage with the help of a translator, and I like how they sometimes say things and then tell the translator not to translate it (because they realise how it would sound). This leads to few funny moments occasionally. The movie has a really good start, but after halfway through, the Director/Writer loses his way; it seemed as if he's not sure as to where to take the story. By the time it ended, I felt dissatisfied; the story should have been longer or the characters should have been explored and developed a little more. The two leads, Ben Whishaw and Pei-pei Cheng, give quite strong and incredible performances; they have a few immensely moving scenes. And it doesn't hurt that Andrew Leung, the actor playing the deceased partner, is quite handsome; he and Ben looked quite good together, which makes his death even more painful. The conversations the two lead characters share are quite moving and thought-provoking, and the monologue Junn has towards the end on the essence of grief and crying is really beautiful. Let me quote the most effective lines from it: "These memories are all I have; I need to keep them vivid, or they'll fade like the face of my husband. I want to dwell on these memories and cry over them because they comfort me. Through plenty of crying, I've learnt to be content that I won't always be happy, secure in my loneliness, hopeful that I'll be able to cope."The movie is depressing, yet uplifting, but somehow I feel, it failed to reach its true potential.

The movie is stupid, but that's what makes it succeed. I don't think I've laughed this hard and constantly since I watched Shane Black's films. The cast also makes it work, including Tom cruise's most daring performance since eyes wide shut. You won't recognize him though, so I'll just say he plays Les Grossman. This is definitely a must see movie, even if you don't like the cast. The only jack black movie I truly enjoyed was school of rock, but he's fantastic in this. Don't miss it!
(us) wrote: The 31% on this movie is SO undeserved. It is a fun movie with a good mix of humor and cute storyline. It has no liberal agendas typical of Hollywood these days. The entire family can enjoy it. It is an unique movie with an idea I don't think has ever been done before. No, it is not a serious movie and should not be treated as such. The mix of kids was good. We pull this out every Christmas and enjoy watching it every year!
(us) wrote: Great adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel. Some of the cells from the novel are taken and put directly on the screen. Gerard Butler does an excellent job as Leonidas and the rest of the 300 cast were also built like and acted like imposing Greek gods. Great stylistic action sequences and camera work by Zack Snyder. Not to be missed!

(mx) wrote: Feel like watching another Dead Poets Society-alike movie. Meryl Streep's performance here is mesmerizing. I cannot but fall in love with the graceful melodies from those violins. What's more, can't you believe this inspiring, charming, moving and beautiful film is from Wes Craven?
(ca) wrote: Not nearly as good as Charade, this one isn't helped much by Peck's presence. He just doesn't seem very convincing in such a physical role and he seems to serious to carry off the humorous elements. Replace Peck with Cary Grant and you've got a better, but still not very good, picture. Is it titled Arabesque because all of the Arab characters are Caucasians made up to look Arab-esque?

(mx) wrote: While overlong and not one of the best biopics out there, Ali nevertheless benefits from the sure-handed direction of Michael Mann, Will Smith's powerful performance and some entertaining boxing sequences.
