Michael Winner, having brought his extremely cynical view on things, directed a very captivating film. It's a classic revenge story that could easily be translated to a similar western just by altering the wardrobe and sets. It's Winner's direction and Bronson's acting that elevate Death Wish. It is so scary and gloomy that the film could just as well have been made as a horror movie, and probably should be classified as one instead of as a crime drama/action movie.Like a horror movie, the moral implications espoused are muddled. It's the story of man frustrated by the government's inability, but claimed ability, to protect him, taking the law into his own hands. What once were his predator's now become his prey, and he himself becomes the target of police scrutiny instead of the criminals he hunts down. So there's a twist on the old revenge story. The story is diluted a bit by Gardenia's domestic police detective and his over confident side kick but it's much needed relief from the intense gloom permeating most of the film. Most of the scenes take place at night in isolated delapidated settings, and the Gardenia scenes help to keep the film from becoming one dimensional.
