(it) wrote: It gets right into it and pulls no punches--it must easily be one of the best, most truthful films about American slavery (which is probably why it's been so ignored/suppressed). A portrait of a society as a farm, as a family, ruled by bourgeois-aristocrats. But is contemporary capitalist life really that much different? Watch it instead of (or at least with) Django Unchained (and instead of or with Gone with the Wind!).
(es) wrote: The prototypical Sam Fuller B-picture-saurus. Low-budget, but completely convincing as the realism seeps through in Fuller's always acerbic dialogue, Fixed Bayonets might not be his best film but it certainly has that quality of being "simple and hard-hitting" that he always espoused. Gene Evans reprises yet another lead role as the gruff Sergeant Rock, straddling a Korean War battlefield with the only politics that matter once you're on the ground facing down the enemy guns: the politics of survival. The ending was a bit abrupt but seeing as Fuller gets his point across after the first half an hour or so I'll give the man his due.

(ru) wrote: John Wayne shows his colors in this western classic, playing a character near 20 years older than him to great effect. Waynes performance and the advanced feel of the film amazes me - upon watching this the first time I could not believe it was made as early as 1949! It adresses the relationship between the U.S. Army and the native Americans and manages to be fairly sensitive in its approach. The no bloodshed-ending is superb, in my point of view.
