(kr) wrote: What a real let down. Hancock features two great leads in Will Smith and Charlize Theron. These are the problems. The story is about an alcoholic superhero who is more trouble than he is worth. The public hates him and he knows that, but doesn't care. One day, he saves a man from certain death. The man then sees the good in our main character and tries to show him.
(ca) wrote: Depressing and melodramatic at times, but it also has Ronit Elkabetz (actress of "The Bands Visit" and director of last years similarly underrated "Shiva") in short shorts: dangerously short really. The bedroom scenes had a great naturalism and sense of cinematic cleverness, but the struggle between traditional culture and "the heart", was a bit hammy. I didnt want to watch this at first but became sucked into the highly ritualized courtship our Steve Carrel looking lead is dragged into. Having already been introduced to almost 100 brides to be and still unmarried at 31, our hero's family thinks him a freak, a condition his life as a philosophy studennt going for his doctorate is no longer enough to buffer. Secretly he is seeing older woman and divorcee Elkabetz, which is a big no-no within his particular Georgian family. The family vs. the lover's confrontation scene is borderline ridiculous, even if it does make a warped emotional sense (and is not impossible), but it's another blemish on a film that has it's fair share. Still it is an engrossing melodrama with style, wit, and poise offering an Isreali variation and insight into the pains and joys of star-crossed love.

(br) wrote: An absolute masterpiece, and my favourite action film in terms of aesthetic (here expressed by a great interaction of art direction and photography) : Hill brilliantly stages a hard boiled, Frank Miller-like yarn with Michael Par asthe Mrlowesque antihero and Diane Lane as the femme fatale/singer. Everybody's perfectly cast here (and Hill's bold as usual in getting not so poular actors for the leads), the songs are great, so are the cars and the action. It would have been 1984 Oscar pick for six awards at least : picture, directing, original screenplay, cinematography, art direction, original song (I can deam about you), and I would have considered it for editing too.
(kr) wrote: B-movie quickie, mostly of historical interest, as it was rushed onto screens shortly after Dillinger's death. The grim tone is fine, and Tierney is electric, but it's just a little TOO lean and cardboard cheap for my tastes.

(br) wrote: Not nearly as good as the first two as it lacks charisma but still pretty entertaining. Missing alot of elements and is less intense with a dense predicable storyline. Still nonetheless it's not a complete failure but it was truly over shadowed by the first two missing that shock value along with a less than amusing finale. Only hardcore Alien fans can appreciate this installment while others may not be as warm and forgiving like myself.
