Mike M (ag) wrote: The film is a mildly entertaining diversion, light and fluffy, but conversely not very deep either. Billy is NOT a sympathetic character, as he wallows in self-indulgent wish fulfillment, including murdering his family, friends and co-workers. The film serves mostly as a glimpse of England in the 60's, but the story doesn't really hold up so well. It is a VERY similar film to "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", which I feel is a better film. If you're looking for a time capsule, this serves adequately.

Seriously, every main character that isn't a villain or a villain's accomplice is an occidental in this thing--and it only gets more ridiculous from there. The evil scientist has literally no solid motivation behind his experiments, the main character is essentially just an overblown caricature of all the stereotypes associated with men of the '50s, all backstory is told in huge lumps of exposition...there's very little that "The Manster" does right, and that is precisely what makes it so gloriously fun. In fact, the only reason I can think of that this hadn't been featured on MST3K is that it drags in a few places--most notably toward the end. When there's a homicidal mutant with goofy prosthetics being chased around by the cops, I shouldn't be sitting here, listening to poorly-executed melodrama!Despite the occasional stumbling block though, this is one hell of a good film to make fun of. And that's the only reason I've rated it so highly. But if you're looking for something that can stand on its own merits, then what are you doing, looking at a movie called "The Manster" in the first place?

Jon P (au) wrote: Yasujiro Ozu's delicate post-war drama presents us with a half-open window into an oddly compelling world of marriage-obsessed mundanity.Ozu's nuanced film follows a soap opera storyline characterised by chatter and crumbling traditions in a Western-influenced East. The meandering melodrama is broken up by sly moments of serenity and idiosyncrasy, but the film is perhaps most notable for its unusual framing techniques, which leave us literally 'looking up' at Ozu's puppet-like players.Late Spring is a peaceful film, somehow numbing, but fascinating. Constricted, but creative. Static frames keep us stuck to the screen and unspoken thoughts keep us curious for more.

Andrew S (ag) wrote: A little known but absolutely brilliant movie and my fave ever. It's a beautifully told, simply story whose depth and beauty comes from the fact that this is a simple tail, VERY well told and VERY well acted (mainly by youngsters).

Andy D (mx) wrote: An emotional, tense film from the get go. A very engaging film. An impossible situation. An impossible choice. Yet a choice has to be made. What would you do?
