Casper

Casper

Furious that her late father only willed her his gloomy-looking mansion rather than his millions, Carrigan Crittenden is ready to burn the place to the ground when she discovers a map to a treasure hidden in the house. But when she enters the rickety mansion to seek her claim, she is frightened away by a wicked wave of ghosts. Determined to get her hands on this hidden fortune, she hires afterlife therapist Dr. James Harvey to exorcise the ghosts from the mansion. Harvey and his daughter Kat move in, and soon Kat meets Casper, the ghost of a young boy who's "the friendliest ghost you know." But not so friendly are Casper's uncles--Stretch, Fatso and Stinkie--who are determined to drive all "fleshies" away.

Young but lonely ghost Casper has spend most of his years in the afterlife living in an old mansion with his three mischievous uncles, while hoping to find a friend. Lucky him, one day, a "ghost psychiatrist" and his daughter move to the house and Casper is innocently attracted to the young girl. But they are here to rid the house of ghosts... . Mikael K (ag) wrote: Paula Hernndez treats us with a dynamic but overall a bit too safe drama about a reunion between three people who used to mean a lot to each other while growing up.Bruno is an athletic boy working in a car repair shop, Lalo is his scrawny, geeky friend. The different boys are like brothers, sharing their small lives in a minuscule Argentinian town during the seventies. Then, one summer, Lisa moves to the town. Extravagant, flirtatious and outspoken, Lisa charms both of the guys and opens their eyes to the outside world. Lisa's parents are leftist academics fleeing persecution in an ever saturating political climate. Lisa firmly believes that the world is full of possibilities, that everyone has the right to make what they want of their lives. Norms aren't absolute.Hernndez uses the period elements of the 70's well, bathing her flashback scenes in warm summer light, coloring it further with period music. The love triangle between the three young characters grows and offers some great character scenes, transcending the inherent weaknesses of such an old setting. These scenes are about growing up in a broader, ideological and cultural sense. The 70's scenes are intercut with a present day storyline where the three friends meet again. They have lived their whole adult lives apart and become very different from one another, but their reconnection sparks old memories and behavior patterns. At first Lisa contacts Lalo. Bruno joins in later. A return to youth makes all of them reassess their choices and the ways their lives have turned out. Nostalgia stems poignancy and self-discovery much like the one experienced in adolescence."Un amor" is well paced, acted and directed. The trio of characters gets to your skin, the themes of the piece are everyday but profound. Still, the movie feels a bit too familiar and safe, somehow afraid to emerge as anything a bit more unique. I would have loved to have seen more about the worldviews and philosophies of the characters and less about their emotional involvements with each other. Everything here is pleasant to follow, but at the end you feel like you didn't quite get as much as you might have hoped for. This isn't a romantic relationship flick, but it doesn't really land firmly enough in the area of psychological insight or broad themes either.

Mark P (ag) wrote: This is a piss-poor attempt at a fantasy movie but it gets one more star than it deserves because it's been done on a next to zero budget and is therefore better than the more expensive shite out there. There's limited use of a CGI dragon that fails to convince and might have been better if it were a couple of people dressed in a large sheet with some eyes, a mouth and scales painted on. The acting is terrible but at times hilariously so. I suppose it passed an hour and a half chuckling my way through it and didn't cost me the 2.97 that two of my friends each paid for their copy but that's about the best that can be said for it. Check out Penultimate Samurai's review for a listing of the best plot moments that I shan't bother to repeat here.

Andrew T (us) wrote: You see some movies and think, "What the hell was the person who wrote it thinking??". Well, this is a very unsettling story that had me thinking that way. It was also very unique in that it was told from the perspective of the antagonist. As a viewer it had me more into the story than if it had been written from Clara's perspective. During the scenes where Cesar would almost get caught, I was probably just as nervous as he was, which is crazy, because shouldn't I be hoping he gets caught? Again, very unique. Does this scare the s*%$ out of me now? Uh, yes! That's what I expect out of a good horror movie though.

Kyle E (ag) wrote: Bad attempt at delivering a comedy horror flick, but still the best in the series (if that says something of importance to you) Leprechaun is a cheesy, poorly made comedy horror film about a killer leprechaun. Starring a very young Jennifer Aniston, in one of her first films roles, Leprechaun is a mess of a horror comedy film. The film is amusing, but it's still a misfire in the genre. I've seen better horror comedies than this, and this one is forgettable. The performances are questionable and the mood of the film is laid back and silly. This could have been a memorable film, but it doesn't do anything memorable. The acting is horrible, and the gags are boring and repetitive. The film has an unimpressive plot that accompanies the absurdity of this film. Leprechaun is a failure as a comedy horror flick, and it's funny, but only because it's such a bad film. The cast are terrible, and the direction of this film is unfocused and flawed. Director Mark Jones's attempt a comedy horror flick fails on all levels. Leprechaun could have been much better than this, but instead it fails to be a memorable comedy horror flick. This is one of Warwick Davis' worst performances, along with the sequels to this train wreck of a film. However this is the better film in the series, despite the fact it's still a bad film. Leprechaun is the type of film that is almost embarrassing to even call a guilty pleasure.

Jordan K (jp) wrote: Lethal Weapon is one of the pioneering great action films and what makes it work, especially as a franchise, is the thrilling nature of the climax and undeniable chemistry between Gibson and Glover. It's one of the all time defining action films.Martin Riggs, a suicidal loose cannon detective, is partnered with no nonsense veteran cop Roger Murtaugh to solve a murder of a troubled young woman caused by a gang of armed heroin smugglers. The 1980s was a great time for the action genre. Rambo, Die Hard, Arnold flicks, and Lethal Weapon were some of the defining titles of the decade. This is also one of Gibson and Glover's big breaks into film (Gibson had a little bit before this), and Lethal Weapon defines great performances and chemistry. An odd couple chemistry between the two reasonably started the "buddy cop" genre, with some one liners and explosions everywhere, Lethal Weapon is one of a kind. In a field of tons of action films with the same general atmosphere, Lethal Weapon stood out and was a humorous thrill of a film. Great performances from Gibson, Glover, and even Gary Busey, playing the primary villain. The general atmosphere for some parts feels a little more dull, notably in the beginning, but picks up a lot towards the end. Lethal Weapon is gritty, thrilling, and one of the all time great action flicks. Lethal Weapon soon became a hit and led the way for three sequels, which I will also be reviewing.

Cameron M (fr) wrote: Decently performed, off-beat and embracing its own cheesiness with some self-deprecating humor while staying true to its core beliefs, Once I was a Beehive may be the rare religious comedy that is actually effective at being both.
