(fr) wrote: the story was just "run of the mill". and I wasn't really expecting to see Naveen Andrews' rear end thrusting like that on screen. blech. but Marguerite Moreau was wonderful to watch. too bad the script wasn't up to par.

(fr) wrote: Just a delightful Jane Austen-like story with rich people, poor people, people in love, happily and unhappily, beautiful country side castle, weird artistic characters and... Bill Nighy! Also some humorous nudity, male beauty and gorgeous red hair, which makes it all in all a good Friday night movie!
(br) wrote: The terrible romantic sub-plot and the way it panned out got the film to a bad ending, the more believable one was with Lenny and Faith and the way it got summarized and her bizarre arrest (not entirely clear why) got the film off tangent especially the length it took to get to that point.

(kr) wrote: During World War II, a Marine corporal is shipwrecked on a Pacific Island, whose only other inhabitant is a Catholic nun. Essentially a two-character play set against a tropical background, this is a triumph for all concerned. Stars Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr give such convincing, understand performance that you almost feel as if you are an unwanted observer, especially as their two so-very-different character begin to fall in love. John Huston may have been one of the most erratic film directors, but, with the right cast and material, he could achieve greatness, as he does here.
