(gb) wrote: There were so many awesome elements of this movie, but there were also some not-so-awesome elements. Thankfully the good outweighs the bad. Hilary Swank is dynamite, along with her crew of talented students. The story on its own is wonderfully inspirational. Close to the end, however, it felt very soap opera-y, particularly with the divorce and the whole to-do with the students wanting to stay with Ms. G. Regardless or not if it happened in real life, having the students move on with Ms. G wouldn't really teach them anything new about moving forward. Sometimes the flow of the story got a little lost and sidetracked, almost distracted. Overall it is a very good film with some moments that didn't quite fit.

First time director Steven Greenstreet wisely chooses to keep away from narration, focusing instead on letting the event protagonists speak their minds, and reveal their attitudes on camera, with seemingly equal exposure given to conservative views and liberal views. The participants are incredibly candid and open with the filmmakers, which really allows the viewer to feel a personal connection with this community, political or religious views notwithstanding. Some genuinely funny scenes and people as well. Sadly, and scarily, my conclusion after watching this is that it seems many have a tenuous grasp on what freedom of speech actually is, and the importance of civil discourse. What's more, lots of feverishly strong opinions without facts to back them up - on both sides of the coin. Technically, the film is rough around the edges, betraying the fact its the work of students who maxed out three credit cards to complete the film, but their efforts have been well worth it; This Divided State is suprisingly effective.

(es) wrote: This is what movies are all about; transporting us to a forgotten era with a dazzling aesthetic; introducing us to an admirable hero with an enticing quest; and filling us with an incredible array of the emotions that ultimately complement the powerful narrative at hand. Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" is a masterwork of both the moving image and the written word, featuring striking visuals and production design as well as an appealingly classical narrative with welcomed Shakespearean undertones. Russell Crowe's Oscar-winning performance is just the icing on this blood-soaked cake, but what a furiously memorable icing it is. Also, let's not go without mentioning Hans Zimmer's wonderfully apt score either, as one can always count on the man to elevate a truly cinematic moment into the heights of iconicism. And, "iconic" is just the way to describe the film in sum. A true masterwork of the cinematic art and one that no person should skip out on.
(es) wrote: This movie is a modern take on Jesus' life set in the context of five artists doing... a modernized religious play about Jesus (The Passion on the Mountain). It is really, really interesting, whether you look at the acting, the historical-archaelogical research behind the movie, the storyline and, of course, the social commentary (overt, as in the dialogues, but also implied by the storyline structure). Furthermore, contrarily to Arcand's recent movies, it feels lighter, less excessive, and Arcand's trademark tricks are used sparingly. To fully enjoy this movie, however, you need some religious culture.
