The movie has outstanding acting from Meg Ryan's behalf, although Diane Keaton and Lisa Kudrow were great I think that Walter Matthou and Meg Ryan carried the movie from start to finish with heart warming and heart breaking scenes between the two. This may have been an unsuccessful adaption of the book but In my opinion this is one of the best drama movies I have seen despite what anyone thinks. Brilliant 4/5

The Critic (ru) wrote: With so much talent involved, the film fails to meet expectations. Excellent performances, breathtaking cinematography and an admirable score can't make up for Ted Tally's lacklustre script.

Andy R (it) wrote: Still banned in the UK by the BBFC because of the hypnotic sequences in it. This film has some great ideas on how the get at any viewer, it really does deserve the cult status it has now reached

Mike T (es) wrote: Aesthetically speaking, this is a truly beautiful piece, and Louis Malle does wonders with that aspect alone. On top of being a photographic triumph, the movie makes a lot of bold decisions in terms of sexual depictions, especially in regards to adultery. It's a very sensual experience, and is quite influential in a lot of ways. All that being said, the shallowness of the protagonist is a bit wearisome and a lot of the character's actions seem to work in favor of brisk plot development rather than realistic human tendencies. The movie sums itself up too quickly for the amount of material crammed in, and it does a lot of damage to how well transitions play out. Worth a look for its achievements.

Nestor A (br) wrote: Despite being one of Bogart's first feature films, it is amazingly timely given the current economy and the anti-immigration, isolationist sentiments. It paints a chilling picture of how bad "America for Americans" mob mentality can be when groups of individuals use extortion and violence to influence others. The fact that it is based on a true story makes it that much more disturbing.
