Lovable Amsterdam street urchin, 11 year old Ciske is nevertheless much in need of love as the German 1955 title suggests. He is a scamp with a heart of gold. He causes havoc in the classroom pouring ink over his teacher yet when a polio-crippled boy joins the class Ciske is one of the only children to befriend him and is bullied as a result. His mother works in a bar and Ciske helps out often late into the night - his father is at sea and his mother supplements her income with prostitution. Ciske is also a very angry young man and he smoulders with rage at life's injustices.

He tags along in its wake, videotaping one artist after another, but the most famous of them all eludes him - the legendary British street artist Banksy. The two are finally brought together one day, and Banksy eventually persuades Guetta to make a documentary on underground art using the thousands of hours of footage that he has collected. The resulting 90-minute film is so stunningly bad that Banksy tells Guetta to "go make some art" while he takes up the documentary project himself.'Exit Through the Gift Shop' is the result, and I am tempted to say it is a work of genius. It starts as Banksy's film about Guetta's film about Banksy, but over time it morphs into a slightly resentful character sketch of Guetta. Why? Because when Banksy tells Guetta to "go make some art", the latter piggybacks off Banky's unwitting endorsement to start his own artistic career as 'Mr. Brainwash' and becomes a roaring success despite a complete lack of talent. He even sets up a kind of assembly line of creative people to make art for him, focusing only selling the work. In other words, he becomes a comically unaware capitalist - symbolizing everything that his "work" parodies.This is a confusing shift in tone that makes the film seem a little disjointed towards the end, but there comes a Eureka moment that encapsulates the spirit of the film. Mr. Brainwash has crossed $1 million in sales, and a bemused spokesman of Banksy is commenting on the dizzy irony of the whole situation. "I think the joke is on..." He pauses, puzzled. "I don't know who the joke is on, really. I don't even know if there is a joke."The kicker? There is speculation that the whole film is an elaborate hoax, with Mr. Brainwash being Banksy's greatest work of art - or even Banksy himself.

I look at true sports stories like "Miracle" and "The Blind Side," or fictional sports stories like "Hoosiers" and "Rocky," and I wonder how anybody can be impressed with this film. It was a good movie, but was a big disappointment since I was expecting "the best sports movie ever." Now that I have been clear on my stance in the contention for being "the best sports movie ever," there are a lot of great things to be said about this film. First, the film offers a lot of insight into the psyche of a baseball pitcher. Kevin Costner is the perfect strategist as he teaches a hotheaded pitcher not to over think his pitches. He was cast for his athleticism and actually hit two home runs with the cameras rolling. He played this role to perfection, but the love story and Susan Sarandon's character just got in the way. I suppose that there has to be some x-factor to create competition between the players (other than their egos), but there is so much sex that it became unappealing. If I was expecting a romantic comedy, it would have been one thing. But when you are expecting "the best sports movie ever," it seems like there should be more sports. Next, this young Tim Robbins was very memorable. I never realized that he was so tall, but his 6'5 stature played well with his lightning-fast-but-erratic-pitching-accuracy. I also think it is cool that the writer was a minor league baseball player and brought his own experiences into this screenplay. The realism is there - it is just unfortunate that so much of this film took place off of the field and in the bedroom. I would definitely recommend "Bull Durham" to any sports fan, as long as they are prepared for the sexual content and are not expecting "the best sports movie ever."

Eric R (es) wrote: Grant McLaine (Jimmy Stewart) is an ex-railroad employee, now a vagabond who goes from town to town. He is approached by railroad company to guard a train which is delivering $10,000 because the train has been robbed 3 times in a row by a criminal named Whitey, preventing a large group of their employees from being paid. Grant was fired from this exact railroad company months ago for what they believe was aiding The Utica kid, who happens to be Grant's brother. Grant agrees to the railroad's proposal but when the train is high-jacked, Grant discovers that his brother, The Utica Kid, is actually working with Whitey, the man responsible for the robberies. Night Passage is another Jimmy Stewart western that is surprisingly not directed by Anthony Mann. Apparently Mann and Stewart had a falling out while on set and Mann left the project. It's a solid western centering around's Grant's character having to confront his past demons. The Utica Kid and Whitey have a very interesting relationship, in that they bicker and fight among themselves constantly making it hard on the viewer to determine where Utica's allegiances lie. This sets up the last part of the film where Grant tracks the bandits down leading to a confrontation between him, Whitey, and Utica Kid. Night Passage is a decent western but it's really just average among Jimmy Stewart's catalogue of Westerns. The film felt emotionally flat and I don't think the brother vs brother relationship was very invigorating, which really was a big problem for me. I really wonder how this film would have came out with Anthony Mann as I found most of the performances to be bad as well. Maybe I am being too harsh, but I think the film could have been sooo much more reflective and deeper in this struggle which Grant faces in confronting his past.
