It took me a while to warm up to Staunton Hill probably due to the story which has been done numerous times before (a couple of twentysomethings have car trouble and decide to spend the night in a barn in the middle of nowhere, falling into the clutches of a depraved family.) Nevertheless for a first movie, this is a very solid affair. Like his father, Cameron seems to be a master in creating an atmosphere of dread and despair. It is beautifully filmed with the wonderful autumn colours of the landscape contrasting sharply with the bloody mayhem inside the barn. And it does get very brutal and grim but not in a glossy saw-like way. It is not perfect but it did suceed in creeping me out from time to time.
