Stephen Y (au) wrote: I rate this movie 1.75 stars.I'm trying. Really trying to give these types of Japanese movies a chance to impress me. Alas, another weak movie. To be fair, the Devilman concept and character did look cool. Not the quasi "boy-devil" but rather the full blown Devilman. That said, don't get me started on his "angel-boy" looking friend or some of the other villains in this movie. I don't know what it was, but there was something just wrong with this film. Could it be the half dressed teenage boys that looked effeminate? or the villainous half dressed demon-woman with the teenage boys? or even the part where the devil-boy kisses his sister? Wait, that's right...he was adopted. No problem now. Then there was the scene where the devil boy walked around with his girlfriend's head. Strangely, one scene had the head's eyes closed and then open. Oh yeah, you can see where this is going. Now excluding the oddities above, when the movie was in CGI mode the artistry and graphics were really good. Though terrible editing, a weak storyline, and all but a confusing end just ruined the film. Furthermore, I saw a dubbed version of the movie where everyone was a "devil." However, I'm sure the Japanese word was probably "Yokai" which not only means devil but also spirits or monsters. Which would have made the movie make a little more sense. Consequently, this movie is not recommended for rental. I know its a re-make of a manga but even then, the manga reader may be disappointed. Still, if one must rent this film I hope you really really love Devilman or I recommend watching it for the actresses.

Alwyn D (mx) wrote: passable brit com. better in book form, but translates fairly well. a great ensemble cast and a poster which suffers from overemphasis on rowan atkinson who is hardly even in the film.

Kevin L (us) wrote: Pretty bland. The action takes you out of the movie because it defies physics. The movie is set in the modern world so wire work action makes the story look phony. I still like Jet Li beating up Anthony Anderson.

M S (ag) wrote: Fruit Chan is a fine movie maker. This film is a keeper. Will only improve with age.

Paul F (de) wrote: The soundtrack from this movie is awesome! The film is pretty good but predictable.

Jeff B (it) wrote: Not as biting in the dialogue as some of Preston Sturges' other stuff, but it is still very humorous and the satire is spot-on. I didn't really like the framing device used for the narrative, but it did allow for a bit of a joke at the end. Overall, I enjoyed it.

Rodney E (au) wrote: Not exactly a remake of the Toolbox Murders, Tobe Hooper's version is pretty good considering his post TCM2 career. Dont get me wrong, Hooper is my favorite American Master of Horror and there is decent and entertaining stuff in even his worst stuff. I caught this a few years ago and enjoyed it. Hooper's Toolbox Murders features a batch of strange characters who border on tolerable to annoying, which works in horror, especially in their demises. Speaking of demises, the death scenes involving the tools were pretty cool. It got a little too rushed and cliched at the end but this was a more return to form for Hooper.
