Bryan W (br) wrote: An intriguing, engrossing, and disgusting film that wraps the audience tight in the labyrinthine plot while simultaneously attempting to recreate the sensation of a mind gone mad in the viewer. I can't imagine another midnight movie succeeding on this level. Bonus points for featuring the acting talents of the oft confused (and incredibly talented) Bill Pullman and Bill Paxton.

But the leap in movie language orchestrated by Tsui Hark with Butterfly Murders is almost in the same league. Both fantasy, horror, mistery and... Post-apocalypse intermingle in the genre, and the defining style of its author will return many times for twenty years to come and more, in HK and beyond, from A Chinese Ghost Story to Dao to Detective Dee. A killer application in wuxia.

Anyone who thinks that Ozu's characters are "too polite" and "too nice" should see this since it addresses that aspect of Japanese culture directly in addition to criticizing corporate culture and westernization . One of my favorite moments was when the English teacher and the boys' aunt whom he has a crush on exchanges nothing but pleasantries about the weather. I don't know what happened when he switched to color, but the music in these films are much better. And god bless Ozu's scatological humor and fart jokes.
