Corey n (kr) wrote: This is a western movie but the story takes place up north in a small Canadian town. A American gunslinger called the Montana Kid comes into town injured, smelly and needing bullets. But Canada is not known for its gun play but more for its Mounties and their friendly citizens. Well at least most of them are friendly. He sticks around to pay off some debts and to have a duel with the local blacksmith. The film stars Paul Gross. He is funny yet also scary at the same time. The film has bits of comedy and drama. There are many funny moments and lines throughout this film. Plus the Canadian scenery is beautiful in this movie. Not your typical western movie that should appeal to people who don't usually watch a western. Well worth the watch.

Morally it's insane yet innocently it seems harmless. This would of got just the 3 stars but I pushed in a half more for actually puzzling my view of this situation. I know what's right from wrong and yet I felt sorry for the true enemies or rather, the guilty ones.I did not expect to be moved like that and feel something for this story but I was quite stunned in the end. I was actually not liking what was going on and then a sudden impact in the story started to sink in and now I was sad... I should be glad at what happened but I actually felt sorry for everybody even though they were all guilty for something.A great Australian flick that builds up gradually. On the drama scale its a winner and for me, the story still lingered in my thoughts long after I saw the movie. Another film that I was 'Not Interested' in that I enjoyed surprisingly. Thanks to all those who kept recommending it till I finally said... Oh, alright then!

Marianne V (jp) wrote: It a creative and different high school story, although predictable. It had a good story to develop but probably no time to end it properly.

Guy G (fr) wrote: [85/B+] This is a dour but majestic and clear-eyed look at the settling of Canada, through the missionary activities of French Jesuits. The title character, an idealistic and inflexible priest, finely played by Bluteau, is guided by Native allies on a religious mission from Samuel de Champlain`s little settlement of Quebec into the grim, resplendent, forested expanses of the Canadian wilderness, where few (if any) white men have dared to pass, and where Indian peoples still hold sway. The harshness and beauty of the landscape is powerfully evoked, manifesting a sullen, unforgiving presence that is almost a character in its own right. It becomes one of the primary challenges facing the Black Robe, not only in terms of physical negotiation, but through its emanated spirits of coldness and futility, which he interprets as filling the souls of the indigenous peoples, too, who are stubbornly and impractically resistant to his civilizing mission. Wracked with doubt and misunderstanding of the Natives` ways, his courageous efforts prove ultimately futile and senseless, even helping destroy the Algonquins who had loyally aided him, as well as the Hurons he had been sent to save spiritually. This kind of Catholic heart of darkness may be familiar to many from other movies and tales, and it`s brought to life very well here, illustrating with deft touches the role such sadly misguided projects played in the founding of the European New World. But what BLACK ROBE really excels at is its raw, intelligent, and unsentimental depiction of the Natives whose world and souls (and resources) were so coveted to begin with. It`s their points of view, their civilization and precarious circumstances, at a time when they still held the upper hand over white men, that make this a movie quite unlike any other.

Chris A (ru) wrote: Good film. A dramatic tone to it. Very telling of how ones life, when addicted to drugs, can spiral out of control. I guess you need to be in a somber mood to appreciate this movie.

Pete S (gb) wrote: Typical 80's movie. Still good though. Doesn't have that feeling of cheap movie anywhere throughout it.
