Eddie G (ru) wrote: Despite a serious flaw, California Suite is both a classic and a movie well worth watching. The Oscar winning performance of Maggie Smith as a long unappreciated actress nominated for an Oscar, is sufficient to elevate this movie to the must see category. Michael Cain is brilliant as Maggie Smiths' husband. Walter Matthau proves again that he can play but not overplay a difficult comedic situation. Alan Alda and Jane Fonda both deliver moving performance as a long divorced couple wrestling with the wreckage of their marriage as they wrestle with their daughters future. Neil Simon's Oscar nominated script is only flawed by the inclusion of the story of two Doctors and their wives vacationing together, which is never the less played well by Richard Prior and Bill Cosby. The visuall, sometimes over the top, slapstick of this skit does not fit well with the verball comedy of the other stories. It would have made a great movie of it's own, but seems out of place with the other stories. Despite this flaw, California Suite remains a movie well worth seeing, filled with Neil Simons wit, and excellent performances by Hollywood legends.

James H (es) wrote: 48/100. Certainly one of Elvis Presley's lesser efforts, there aren't even many good songs in it. The plot is paper thin and it is just thrown together without much thought except to exploit the popularity of Elvis at the time and an excuse to display a lot of bikini clad women. Pretty painful to sit through at times, the yoga musical number is one of the low points.

Daniel K (it) wrote: 1: Awful picture with virtually no redeeming qualities. I know why Cagney made it, he loved musicals and was patriotic and it fit his persona, but he doesn't give much of a performance. Doris Day and her charisma is about the only bright spot in this ho-hum and tired story.
