Sure the humour maybe campy and is modeled after a cheesy mystery novel (the cypher), and it was probably a likely precursor to the for the upcomming Bond film "Dr. No".

The novel is written like poetry and is already put in the same class as "The Diary of Anne Frank" (1947). The 2013 film version is very faithful to the book, although a bit tidied up, particularly the dead after the Himmel (Heaven) Street bombing, and even fleshes out what happens to Liesel Meminger and Max Vanderburg after World War II.
