Lee (ag) wrote: Fact-based drama about a serial-killing paedophile cannibal who murdered 55 young women and children in the Ukraine and Russia during the Soviet ruled years of the 80s. Given the grim nature of the story there are some really uncomfortable scenes to sit though even though it's not that violently graphic. Malcolm McDowell was ok as Andrei Evilenko the killer (real name Andrei Chikatilo), at times he came across a bit pantomimish, but also delivers some chilling moments. The whole hypnotism angle was a bit silly too, I wish that wasn't thrown in. It's a far from great film but it has its moments of interest, and paedophile themed movies don't come along too often, so if you feel you can handle it check it out.

Based on the book by CNN Producer Robert Wiener, who's attempt to get the story out of Baghdad and into people's home's makes for great entertainment. The cast is excellent, including Michael Keaton as Wiener, who starts off very gung-ho about what he wants to get out of this assignment, but by the time it's all over, his rose colored glasses look at things has long since faded away. My biggest issue with the film is the Rock and Roll attitude of the score by Steve Jablonsky, with a little help from music producer Hans Zimmer. Director Mick Jackson won a Director's Guild Award for his work on this film, and it was very muched deserved.

I've heard about Nia Vardalos for quite a while because of this film, but I never seen her in a film before, so I wouldn't know what to think of her, but in this, she's really good as an actress and a writer. She's very funny in this and definitely sold it out as a main lead. The chemistry between Toula and Ian is very good and sweet enough for me to buy them as a couple. The family are hilarious to watch, and are the best part of the film which you just want to see more of them. The way the jokes were executed seem like something from a sitcom show which I'm just expecting a laugh track from it, which the jokes did get a laugh out of me, even if all of the jokes didn't hit bullseye. You can sort of see where it's gonna go, but the way it's handled is not that bad, and wasn't as mean-spirited as I thought was going to be. Even though My Big Fat Greek Wedding isn't going to be a comedic classic, it's still a hilarious enough film that the whole family would have a great time watching it.

Perhaps this is because this TV movie is supposed to be shown in (two) separate episodes (as IMDb suggests for the German version) rather than in one go in the middle of the night. On the other hand, a topic such as this (multifaceted disaster scenario centred round a train) can take all the time it likes, for there is always something more, new and exciting to entertain the viewer with. Atomic Train?contains just about every possible disastrous event imaginable, with every possible complication on top " to the point that it gets almost ridiculous (how many characters had a wounded leg again?). Surely, it is conceivable to have a goods train with malfunctioning brakes, containing explosive chemicals that make one want to avoid an emergency crash. The mountainy surroundings of the area (Denver) are realistic and plausible in such a scenario too. But the illegally-smuggled old Russian atomic bomb gets close to pushing the limits of believability (That on top of the rest? Hardly likely). And so are the complications that got thrown into the script throughout, like people getting hurt, vehicles running out of fuel, and people ending up in trouble while trying to rescue others. Of course these things can happen, but not simultaneously, in my view. Then again, this is a well-executed action-packed disaster movie with an unexpected outcome (=the atomic bomb DOES explode, unlike so often in disaster or action movies, in which the bomb gets deactivated two seconds before the expected blast), so we are not supposed to get fussy about such details. Atomic Train? is a smooth suspense flic which manages to keep the inevitable melodrama to a reasonable minimum, creating space for the abundance of shots of the monstrous horror train, about to destroy part of the civilized world. As I said, I didn't get to see the ending, but I suppose the leading characters got off alive by the skin of their teeth. There has to be a positive note somewhere in the equation.

I've liked his work over the years (Candyman, Immortal Beloved, Mr Nice) and was keen to find some of his early stuff. Paperhouse was his third film and as soon as I read the synopsis I had to buy it. How this movie eluded me all these years is beyond me. It tells the story of an 11 year old girl, Anna, who is struck down with glandular fever and suffers frequent black-outs. In her boredom she takes to drawing... her first picture is a house. During her black-outs she finds herself inside her own drawing where she meets a lonely boy. She had drawn him in the top window and forgot to give him legs. She soon realises that she can control this world by adding to her picture in her waking hours. At first fun, her fantasy takes a sinister turn when her alcoholic father finds his way into the drawing... his eyes are removed and he wields a hammer and he's hellbent on bashing Anna. If I had discovered this film when I was a kid it would have scared the living shit out of me. The imagery is great and Bernard Rose establishes himself as a serious director. Its a film that needs to be scratched below the surface and I suspect repeat viewings will reveal less obvious subtexts and parallels. While suitable for children (10+) Paperhouse offers a twisted psychological horror that will frighten the pants off the young'uns. Comparable titles are Mirrormask and The Fall. I'm glad I stumbled upon this one... better late than never.

Bill T (us) wrote: Continuation of the Born Free franchise (which, technically, this is the last one until a cable movie many years later) different actors playing the lead roles, which suffer, as they don't have the chemistry or the believability of the first set. Anyways, it's all about the lions, though, isn't it? I guess the producers must think so. MASSIVE amount of voice over narration here, with lots and lots of animal footage. But it does pick up a lot at the end though.
