(de) wrote: It's sad that so many peoples criticism of this film isn't if the film itself but rather the fact that the director isn't still making the same kind of films he was making 40 years ago. God forbid an artist evolve or take a risk. For what it is, a surrealist gothic horror/comedy, I thought it was pretty good.

After the first hour I thought it was intentional spoof of the genre and came off as odd, but mildly interesting on account of the oddness. Then the film appears to become more serious as a mystery / thriller before making a strange turn at the end. If it was some intended cleverness, it was too clever for me, and if not then it was not clever enough.

A few of the popular kids find out and set out to publicly humiliate her by pretending to be the teacher and luring her to a hotel room. Maybe not wise considering she is studying witchcraft in her spare time. Things go bad and Tamara is accidentally killed. The kids decide to bury her for fear of what will happen to them if Tamara's death is discovered. Before too long, Tamara rises again due to a spell she cast previously, and though she's now beautiful and seductive, she's also risen evil, and she's got an axe to grind with all involved, whether they intended to hurt her or not...

(it) wrote: If you're looking for a typical blood and gore vampire movie then you better look elsewhere. This movie is moody and at times a bit slow but for the most part intriguing. Julian Sands does a wonderful job of portraying the lonely vampire. This movie is dark and atmospheric and quite enjoyable if you give it a chance. I give the warning once again that if you're looking for an action vampire movie then stay away from this little gem because it's more of a character study than anything else.

(us) wrote: Maybe Doris Day/Rock Hudson comedies live better in memory than actually on screen. This largely unfunny comedy of misdirection and broken communications is packed with early-60s cultural stereotypes. Hollywood is one thing, but these people are almost on another planet. (Did women really put bows in their hair, like they would a poodle?) A really sharp cast isn't given much funny stuff to do; even the usually hilarious Tony Randall is reduced to a bad drunk act. Only Paul Lynde comes off well, in a very funny cameo as a cemetery director who really loves his job. If you saw it some decades ago and have fond memories, just leave them be. You'll be happier for it.

(es) wrote: Like an earlier King Vidor film, Duel in the Sun, this has heaps of camp appeal. The story of a small town femme fatale with big city aspirations. Bette Davis is a powerhouse, absolutely spellbinding. Her character is diabolically evil, and yet more than a little sympathetic. Who wouldn't feel stifled by a life of lumber mills and square dances? I see a lot of other reviewers describing her performance as "bad"... sure, it's trashy and over the top, but you can't take your eyes off her. Joseph Cotten has the thankless role of the nice guy, but he's Joseph Cotten so it's cool. The film sports a number of memorable moments (Davis lamenting "If I don't get out of here I'll die. If I don't get out of here I hope I die and burn!" while the mills shoot flame into the sky in the background is unforgettable), some killer lines, and a hell of an ending. The "What a dump!" line will be familiar to any fan of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, where Elizabeth Taylor tries to recall the name of this movie. Max Steiner's score is typically overblown, but for once it seems appropriate. Davis herself called the movie "terrible", but except for the lousy opening narration, I think it's a knockout.

(kr) wrote: This movie ran for a whole week back in 1959, when Channel 13, then WNDT in Newark, NJ transitioned from a commercial station to an educational one. I watched it every day as a kid. Wonderful suspense and acrobatics on the part of Gene Raymond. You almost root for the bad guys to get away with the huge heist.
(de) wrote: Hate me on this but this is maybe one of the most awesome over the top action flick in years. Very memorable and been watching this film for like 5 times now. The more over acting sequences are, the more awesome it will get. With all the ridiculous gun fight scenes combine with the best modern rock music you'll hear, it will made your movie appetite filled. The story was a mess but when you got Clive Owen and Giamatti on this funny and smart screenplay, it's a different story. If you're tired of watching slow paced boring stuffs. This will feed you even better. A must have blu-ray material.
