Yes folks, the first African-American President of the United States will leave office in 12 more days and he will be replaced by a brash billionaire who questioned his birth for more than half of his 8-year term. The movie doesn't explore Barack Obama's political beginnings, it only focuses on his first date with Michelle Robinson. For a little romantic drama that's just focused around the future President and First Lady of the United States and their first date, it's something truly refreshing.Regardless of what you may think of President Obama now, you cannot deny that "Southside With You" is a beautifully told love story. Set in Chicago in the summer of 1989, "Southside With You" centers around who do you think? Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) as a young law firm associate who tries to win the heart of Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter), who is a young lawyer at the firm where he works. When Barack wins a chance to hang out with Michelle, she insists that this is not a date but don't underestimate the power of love. During their daylong first date, Barack and Michelle visit an Afrocentric exhibit at a local art center, they attend a community activist meeting where Obama gives a rousing speech on gender equality, they go to the movies and see Spike Lee's racially-charged masterpiece "Do The Right Thing" and they have their first kiss at an ice cream parlor.Barack and Michelle also talk about their childhoods and racial identity issues. Michelle exclaims that Barack has always been smooth-talker and it is indeed true. One of the movie's most poignant moments involves Barack and Michelle getting into an argument over violent and non-violent approaches to problem solving after having left the screening of "Do The Right Thing".Parker Sawyers and Tika Sumpter give terrific performances as the future President and First Lady. Sumpter captures Michelle's whip-smart swagger and Sawyers captures Obama's smooth quip and charming personality. Their scenes of dialogue together is great because Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson are smart people who have distinct feelings for each other. "Southside With You" is an outstanding first feature from writer and director Richard Tanne. He explored the Obamas' lives really well and he gets the flashy words right too. What could've been a horrible Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movie, "Southside With You" stands alone as a warm and gentle 84-minute romance with two remarkable performances and a lively summer setting. It's one of the best movies of 2016.

(es) wrote: Interesting, but not really my cup of tea. I found it impenetrable at times, despite having a rich vein of black humour to it. Dourif is fantastic, and he really holds the feature together, but overall I think it's a tad disappointing. Boasts the wackiest Alex North score I've ever heard...

(mx) wrote: Don't really like this film. I found it pretty dull and boring. There were some nice moments of suspense. however once you learn what the aliens are hurt by and allergic to, you can't help but roll your eyes at how stupid it is.
