Dead Man's Eyes

Artist David Stuart is blinded by a jealous assistant / model. His fiance's father generously offers his eyes for a sight restoring operation. There's only one hitch: Stuart has to wait until after the man dies. Not surprisingly, when the benefactor dies a very premature death, suspicion falls on the artist.

The titular made-up sex act is talked about (it involves smacking someone on the back of the head at the moment of climax) and soon actual sex ensues. One of the boys tries the sex act and accidentally kills the girl. All hell breaks loose. So how good can a horror movie named after a made-up sex act be? Well ... it's not terrible. It's perfectly serviceable as a film where bad people you don't really care about do bad things to each other until barely anyone is left. It drags at times (the sex sequence is particularly egregiously long if surprisingly explicit ... the two things almost balance each other out) and characters do amazingly stupid things, but it kind of works if you aren't being too picky. I wasn't at the time.

Mike B (es) wrote: I like Roddy Piper quite a bit. Besides him, this movie is awful. The characters had IQs lower than dented ping-pong balls. Terrible acting, worse script and an obvious, plodding, terrible plot.

David O (gb) wrote: Not particularly good, but isn't so bad that it is unwatchable.

Cory D (nl) wrote: It makes me want to read the play just to see if it has a bigger gravity to it than the movie. I liked the story, and loved the cast, but it feels like something was lost in translation when it got turned into a film. The ending seemed rushed and wasn't satisfying.

Charles G (fr) wrote: I watched it and wish now that I hadn't. It does make one think about why people exploit others,.

Martin T (br) wrote: Worthwhile, but not as good as Suzuki's best. Great camera angles, though.

Randy T (ca) wrote: Lovely Simone Simon (see Cat People) is a deadly seductress scheming her way from relationship to relationship. An accomplice to murder, she watches as husband kills lover. Feeling trapped, she takes a new lover, Jacques Lantier (Jean Gabin), and suggests that he kill the husband. A vicious cycle that could continue to perpetuate itself, but good ole' Jacques has a few demons of his own.La Bte humaine is a cinematic perfect storm. All the elements (Gabin, Simon, Renoir, Zola) come together to create a masterpiece of romance, tragedy and betrayal.
