Deadlier Than the Male

In this 1967 drama, resourceful British agent Bulldog Drummond, who appeared onscreen in a series of spy stories between 1929 and 1951, returned to duty in the wake of James Bond. Here, Drummond (Richard Johnson) is on the trail of Carl Petersen (Nigel Green), a corrupt industrialist who has a bad habit of stealing the ideas of others and then killing them so he can reap their profits. The nefarious Petersen has a team of female assistants willing to kill on command, led by Irma (Elke Sommer) and Penelope (Sylva Koscina). One more Bulldog Drummond vehicle, Some Girls Do, followed in 1969 before the series was retired again

Scott A (jp) wrote: Okay, I'm not sure if there was really any plot. It really is a live song, followed by an explicit sexual act. These two actors do every thing for real on screen, and see a lot of live bands. I guess the music sounds good and give them props for the stones they had to bang on camera. But seriously, no plot.

James M (ca) wrote: Richard Kelly's follow up to the excellent Donnie Darko is a huge disappointment. Set in Los Angeles following a nuclear war, it follows a vignette of stories and tries to come off as some kind of futuristic version of Short Cuts, involving politics, blackmail, sex and science fiction. It doesn't work though because it's elongated, incomprehensible, pretentious nonsense. The actors just wander around with a look on their face as though they understood the story less than I did. There's some good visuals but the movie as a whole is a failure. Just a director's ego trip following the cult success of his debut.

Peggie J (jp) wrote: I saw this in the theater as a 14 year old and laughed my butt off. I just watched it on Netflix with my 16 year old daughter and she loved it too. Great movie for Mommy Daughter movie night. Nothing too scary and the main character Chris is wholesome and sweet.

Cameron J (nl) wrote: An influential musical that started out a wave of "backstage musicals" - not my favorite kind of musical, I must say, but Lloyd Bacon's "42nd Street" is nonetheless a creative and enjoyable production, with excellent production design (I'm mostly referring to the props and sets designed for the actual stage musical which features as the film's final act), a good cast, and memorable cinematography, especially the famous through-the-legs shot. Some of the shots are edited together in seemingly experimental ways that are more cheesy today than exciting, but I give the film props for trying out new things. The songs aren't that bad, either, though the titular "42nd Street" song is the only one that had me tapping my feet along with the film. The musical sections of the film (the third act) are more entertaining than the dramatic moments, which involve many girls trying to get the leading part in the show (with many innuendos to sexual favors given to the producers), and a stereotypically angry director yelling at them as they try to put on the show. It's remembered for the music and the technique, though, and it gets those mostly right.
