Martyn M (de) wrote: When it comes to horror movies The Exorcist ranks as one of the best in most film buffs lists. This is The Excorcist updated to the 21st centuary. Where it mirrors The Exorcist is in the idea of the child being possessed and the exorcising priest existing on the edge of social respectability in a world that has turned profoundly secular. So when our heroine Emma becomes possessed by Satan himself, and she is judged by her elders to be suffering from psychosis of a scientific kind, she is met by inverterate disbelief by her parents. Our girl is not a sweet child as was the case in the original Exorcist, she is a strong-minded, independant, death metal goth. She is also sexually active, despite being only 15 (although this is only implied at during the film). With her dark ideas comes a risk when she dabbles in the dark magic arts, setting a course for a terrifying ordeal for herself and her family. And in places this, being a horror film, is extremely graphic. But it is not a hack and slash gore-fest. It is a vey well written and well acted story that, when it diverges in plot away from it's more illustrious predecessor, is certainly it's equal. In many places it excels, despite a constraint on budget feel to it. Sophie Vavasseur certainly gives a commendable performance of the emotionally dysfunctional Emma. I like it.
Jeremy R (ca) wrote: It's just your average soft core flick. I wonder why they're trying to trick people with a synopsis that doesn't mention that at all.

Robert P (it) wrote: This movie did not get the credit it deserved. Too many critics simply cannot keep up with artistic innovation. You know a movie (and a book) worth if its something that you talk and think about for days later. This is one of those movies for better or worse.

I was extremely disappointed, but Mike Myers and a few of the others were quite good here. *1/2 (out of ****) C-187 - Samuel L. Jackson is a very talented actor, and when he's in a film like the mediocre 187, I say it's no fault of hi that the film itself is less than successful. The man can act. It's the script and the director (and a lot of the time, the other performers). It's a film that could've been good, but isn't up to par and doesn't take any chances. ** (out of ****) CBeautiful Creatures - Here is yet another violent crime "comedy" from Britain that fails miserably. I do so love the presence of Rachel Weisz, and whenever I see her, the film automatically gets a smile from me, but this one's just too mean-spirited and pointless to be simple fun. *1/2 (out of ****) C-Best Laid Plans - This is one of the most useless and boring films I've seen. It's well-acted, but I warn you: Stay away. * (out of ****) DBody Shots - I was completely insulted by Body Shots, a revolting after school special that treats its audience like utter fools. I hated just about everything it had to offer. I did like some of the perormances, but they're not so great that I would ever sit through this again. * (out of ****) D

Karen A (fr) wrote: Everyone is trashing these silly movies, but damn it, I like them. They were popular then for a reason. Sure, we have fancy computer-generated special effects and actors with no abilities now because of it, but back then, it was good stuff. Appreciate it for what it was, not diss it for what there is now.

michael b (ca) wrote: This is a great concept with a high ceiling of potential that strikes far outside the bullseye. This screenplay needed a couple solid rewrites in which the cast of characters asked the difficult questions that the frustrated audiences was thinking.
