Ted N (au) wrote: Love, infidelity and suicide among the Newlyn Group. Oh dear. Such production values. Such hats. SO many good actors acting. Such coastal scenery. Nice dog. And all for nothing. I am glad I decided to polish the brass, for which useful activity this dreary and undercharacterised tale is a suitably anodyne backdrop.

Ola G (br) wrote: The crooked police commander Simon Weiss (Roschdy Zem), head of the division that supervises Paris's demi-monde, starts out on his nightly tour of bars, discos and strip clubs, making sure once again that the owners don't bend the rules too far. Along with him is the newbie recruit and Weiss appointed driver Laurence Deray (Sara Forestier). Weiss knows he's between a rock and hard place: it's obvious that criminal gangs run rampant in his special domain, and even more obvious that they're protected by higher-ups in the department..."Paris by Night" ("Une Nuit") is a low-key, lifeless (despite its characters and night scenes) and thrill-less cop drama. Theres no real action, and it lacks the suspense I was hoping for and believed I would see. Theres no gripping narrative and instead we are served a chatty and repetitive ride-along with drawn-out dialogues that never seems to end. Theres nothing wrong with the performance from Roschdy Zem, Sara Forestier etc, but theres simple nothing that keeps your attention and it becomes a snooze fest instead.

If you know love, this will make you grab your significant other and hold on tight!

stefano l (it) wrote: The book is very intriguing, well written, it leaves you always breathless and willing of understanding what comes later. Maybe it's been a mistake to watch the movie immediately after having read the book, but surely what I saw was not nearly similar to what I've just read. The movie is sad, the actors (also inculding Jean Reno, who I really like), seem unexpressives. They simply seem not to believe in what they're acting. The movie is fast the right in developing, but it results boring, because what's going on seems obvious and clear, while it's totally not. The scenes jump from nothing to top and from to top to nothing in 10 seconds. Discourses and discussions that should take 2-3 minutes to arrive to their peak employes maybe 60 seconds, giving the idea of something strange and incomplete. If you haven't read the book, and so you don't know the story, in some parts it results difficoult to understand what's happening. The entire scene seems cold, emotionless, completely empty of significance. The soundtracks don't help at all. They are inappropriate. They should give an aura of darkness and sadness, but the only idea they give is of something completely different from the pictures shown. So, I'm very sad about it, but I have to say I found this film poor. Unfortunately very poor. Sad to admit, moreover, than I expected it.

Simon T (es) wrote: This movie is so much better than 'The Phantom Menace' and 'Attack of the Clones', but not as good as 'A New Hope', 'The Empire Strikes back' and 'Return of The Jedi'.

Sydney S (us) wrote: This movie is the first movie I remember seeing as a child. I remember my three-year-old self loathing it with every cell in my small body. I was traumatized. I haven't seen the film since that time, but it had such a strong negative impact on me, I couldn't help but be shocked and disgusted at the high rating it has. I wish those stupid ugly chickens were all turned into pies.

Jordan T (es) wrote: Unfortunately titled, but probably the most audacious of the Kung Fu films I've seen if only because it doesn't tell us everything about everyone right from the outset and lets us learn about the characters motives. Not the masterpiece it is hailed to be, it still has some great choreography (including fighting during a wine tasting and antique store shopping). Gordon Liu is awesome.
