Eyal D (ca) wrote: I'm a big fan so it may differ for you but this documentary is brilliant with what material it provides to its loyal audience. I saw it in Munich where it's currently playing in no less than half a dozen screens and the theatre was packed. Sadly what is missing here is even more material covering far more ground in this auteur's extensive career (good news, it's all available on a three-hour plus DVD). A chronological look into the opus and personality of a mostly elusive man, his genius can be argued but he is certainly an artist, bar none. With an array of interviews by several dozen of his past and present collaborators and, best of all, himself, it's a welcome wonder that he even agreed to interview exclusively for this documentary. Even more interesting, but not surprising to devoted admirers of his works, he doesn't even like his films. Still one would agree that the man who's made over 40 films in just about 40 years that include ANNIE HALL, MANHATTAN, HANNAH AND HER SISTERS, MIDNIGHT IN PARIS (and the list is way to impressively big to go on) deserves some form of praise and here it is done graciously, elegantly and humorously, just like some of The Woodman's best films themselves.Just re-watched WOODY ALLEN: A DOCUMENTARY as much longer, two-part series and couldn't get enough. If Allen's your kind of comedian, writer, director and actor then this film's right up your alley. I, personally, could not get enough even at three and a half hours :-) The man's a genius.
Andrew M (au) wrote: Role Models is a pretty bad movie. The movie tries for comedy, but it doesn't have any. This is Paul Rudd's worst movie ever. I was very disappointed in this movie hearing everyone say it was a great movie. I would not suggest this movie.

Barry N (mx) wrote: I've always enjoyed movies about religion, but there aren't very many that are done particularly well. This is one of the best ones that I've seen in a long while. Some people may find the beginning slow paced, but I think that the film is entertaining enough that it doesn't matter. We also have to get to know the characters more in order for the climax to have a big impact, which I feel was done realistically here. I also really enjoyed the acting in this film. Gary Cooper and Anthony Perkins particularly are really good. The dialogue isn't always top notch, and some scenes feel out of place as they are trying to bring comic relief, but other than that, I think that this film is a gold mine of interesting likable characters, a great central conflict and climax, and entertaining and at the same time informative exposition. I have been wondering why some religious films don't work as a film while others do. I think maybe because this one just shows the lifestyle of Quakers and asking us to sympathize with them instead of 100% agreeing with them. It doesn't feel preachy. I think that's the key. Of course the film also has to be well crafted. Fortunately, Friendly Persuasion is. 9.4/10
