(ru) wrote: As I began watching, I thought it might be a gentler version of Footloose, then later perhaps The Lego Movie aimed more specifically at Christians (and I am one) but eventually I found out it was about fathers and sons, and I experienced... catharsis! It has been a long time since I have gone through that process watching a movie, so I cannot fault it too much, no matter how inane the plot (and it was, kind of). I hope Ray Liotta's performance is recognized... it was real to me. And as for the "follow your dream/gift because it is from God" message, I was a fan of "PK" Alice Cooper and know how he eventually used that as his rationale for continuing to present his sets (does he still sing "I Love the Dead?") and how Ludacris also claims it is a gift from God that he can rhyme about...well, you know. So that part I don't buy so much, logically. But CATHARSIS... that is a precious experience, something that IS, I believe, a gift from God. So, in the midst of the flies, ointment, and how often can that be said, even when there are no flies?

Coveniently Steve Segal turns up and dispatches said baddies with his sword. Rinse and repeat one hundred times. Pathetic acting, crap storyline, mediocre action, this movie fails on all levels.

(jp) wrote: Winner of 1998 best foreign film and with just cause. it is a really exceptional film. Reminds me of the golden age of movies when movies told real stories with real characters and real sets. It is not a happy movie. I would wish for the movies protagonist to have some joyful moments.(what about sex? Was he a Virgin?) The mother is so stark and quiet. The communist boarder is not very well fleshed out. Its an interesting approach to have the lawyer at his "confession" to tell the whole damming story of his fathers murder. Did he do it? Does his success depend on his fathers destruction? The set and period details are simply gorgeous so real. Shot darkly with dark subject matter the film gives us the touches of the german expressionist movies of the early film era; Somber and Moody are words another reviewer used. I loved this movie. I give it 5 stars. Highest recommendation. I still wish for some happiness joy and sex in the protagonists life. But it never comes. He does overcome great odds with his luck in the job and furthering his education. I still wish for a mother who shows her love for son and talks to him and guides him. This never comes she does buy him 2 new shirts and writes a short note. However I find the look, Feel, narrative of the film fascinating... I loved this movie. I give it 5 stars. Highest recommendation

And it does achieve its objective, which is to educate the viewer as to how animation films were produced at the Walt Disney Studios during the golden age. The film shows stages of Dumbo and Bambi which were currently in production. The film is very vintage, though, and I gave myself the challenge of making three kids sit through this. One became extremely restless about 2/3 into it, but eventually we all made it to the finish. It's a great "forgotten" Disney animation feature you might surprise the family with one evening.
