Major Ram is one of the few soldiers from the Indian Army who have been held captive in Pakistan, following the war with India. The Indian army and politicians are unable to make any decision so as not to jeopardize the lives of the captives. Major Ram's brother, Arjun, alias Sunny decides to take it upon himself to enter Pakistan and get his brother free. He now calls himself Salman. On the way he meets with beautiful Ruksar and both fall in love with each other. Unfortunately for them, they cannot be married, so they elope, leading to an unrest within their community, and a hunt is on for them. Salman and Ruksar chance upon the prison camp that is housing Ram, and do get him free, only to find themselves trapped by Pakistani Jihaadis and soldiers.

There's an occasional moment of stoicism in certain characters, namely Gwyneth Paltrow's Margot, but unlike in Anderson's other films, this stoicism actually fits the characters and their development. Anderson has created a huge ensemble of characters, and they all have solid character arcs that are each relatable and sympathetic in their own way. It certainly helps that the cast is full of strong actors, many of which are Wes Anderson regulars, that allow for each character to be distinct and impactful. The real standout here is Gene Hackman, who really steals each scene he's in and leaves you completely invested in his estranged father figure of a character. Anderson certainly brings his quirky camerawork and visual style to this one, but it's not as grating as it is in his recent efforts, and it ends up fitting the film nicely. Wes Anderson's most serious film is certainly one of his more refined efforts.

The movie tries to be what's described above, but falls well short of the mark. Really, it ends up looking like the main character is just stupid and that his parents' problems are incidental. It's seems as though the filmmakers were so confident in the moral message of their film (i.e. parents; especially mothers; should not ever have any fun and should make their home their primary focus in life) that they didn't feel the need to execute the making of the film well, cast good actors, or direct them effectively. This movie was supposedly sent to troops on the front in WWII to entertain them. I can only image how many more Nazis we managed to kill thanks to the fits of rage the terribleness of this movie likely inspired our troops to.

About the absence of love, that involves a bisexual triangle between a gay Jewish doctor and a loney middleaged woman who are both having a affair and are in love with the same shallow young boyish sculptor, played by Murray Head in good performance, his youth and good looks attract both Finch and Jackson. Brilliantly directed by John Schlesinger with a superb script by Penelope Gilliatt. I cannot praise the performances of Finch and Jackson enough, Peter Finch delivers a magnificent Oscar nominated performance as man drowning in respectability, who cannot come out of the closet because of his Jewish congregation who would never understand, and Glenda Jackson is amazing and shows deep inner turmoil, as she is experiencing the stress of sharing her lover with another man. They both fear and know that this twisted triangle is about to collapse, for the young sculptor wants to leave to New York City. Made in 1971 this remarkable film was years ahead of it's time in dealing with the subject of sexuality and adult relationships. Highly Recommended.
