This movie is going to be a little slow for some of you....but I was mesmerized by the cinematography. ....Right where the lead is playing the piano....fillpin brilliant!...and George C Scott is fantastic, so...

Sindy P (au) wrote: This is the story of Chava. A boy from El Salavador in the 1980's, when the civil war was in full swing. He is about to turn 12 and is worried about this. This is the age when the militairy takes the boys to fight for them. You see how his life is torn apart as he wants to be a child, play with his friends and learn at school. But he also has to worry about the wat that goes on around him. Chava is played by Carlos Padilla, which makes an exceptional performance. He truly portrays the boy in living color, amazes you with his mature emotions yet childlike manurisms. This movie is very emotional, but it is wonderful to see how this little boy brings it to life and basically carries the entire movie. He is in 97% of the scenes, if not all. The movie is souly based on his point of view and it is clear from the very first moment. I rarely see such a film carried completely by a child, but this is by far an emotional gem. The way this little boy sees the war is very real and sometimes hard to take. I personally never like scenes where children are being abused in any way and I took this movie down like a very nasty medicine. But it was worht it, because of the well performed and well filmed reality of it. The way it's written makes you truly connect with Chava and feel sorry for him. The climax it truly heartbreaking and I sometimes wonder what made me keep watching, since it was quite graphic, but I'm glad I did. I usually find movies in Spanish quite trivial and even when it's a serious topic they tend to try too hard to copy the emotion that most english spoken films can achieve. This is one was everything but an attempt, it was dead on! I also think it touched me more since I am latina (from Dominican Repucblic) and most of our contries have encountered such civil wars, including mine. Gladly I did not live through it, but this was certainly a very real, deep and terrifying look at what could have been.
