Jerem M (br) wrote: Any tension this movie creates is a result of the pure idiocy of the main character, Christian. Here is a character so stupid, you're on the edge of your seat waiting for him to be brutally murdered. There is nothing - nothing! - more frustrating in a horror/suspense movie than a character defying all degrees of common sense and logic. I bumped it up a half star for the use of a labyrinth, although that potential is largely squandered.

I'd never understood how brutal the times were before this film. And yet this isn't a film that's difficult to watch. It's gripping and brings you into the moment of what life was like in those times - and reminds us of how some things have changes and some things haven't.
Ana B (ag) wrote: Psychological drama where a young American man, Bennie, goes to visit his much older brother in Buenos Aires. Angelo is a writer that has severed all links with his family, and very especially with his successful father, Carlo Tetrocini, a famous orchestra conductor. Angelo has changed his name to Tetro and has found love in Miranda, a smart and outspoken lady. But despite living surrounded by a bohemian circle of friends Tetro seems traumatised by some event in the past and cannot get back to writing. Bennie also resents the implacable shadow of their father and in an attempt to regain the bond with his brother steals his play and gets it into a contest. In many ways this resembles theatre, the importance of the dialogue, the development of the characters and even the Shakesperian touch of the plot. I found the movie visually very interesting: the use of black and white, the heavy contrast of light and shade, making all seem more dramatic, stressing the sadness of their predicament, it does remind me a lot of the atmosphere of The Godfather?. However it is all a bit too psychological for me, too introspective and so overdramatic that you sometimes feel like yelling the characters come on, get over it?. It seems like Coppola has tried too hard to give us a classic and hasn(TM)t been true to himself, at points it all feels too pretentious.
Benjamin F (br) wrote: Lightweight, breezy, and absurd. No Such Thing isn't Hal Hartley's best, but it's still a lot of fun.Sarah Polley's delightful as usual as the leading ingenue in the film's completely absurd postmodern world. Helen Mirren and Julie Christie's characters are fairly one-dimensional, and the latter doesn't get many lines or much screen time, but the former's always entertaining, as you'd expect. Polley and Robert John Burke - who plays the monster - carry the film comfortably, though. There's not a bad performance in the lot, and there's even a few brief appearances by James Urbaniak after his major roles in Henry Fool and Fay Grim! The original score is fairly minimalist and odd, further contributing to the overall surreal atmosphere of the film. And the cinematography is fantastic, with a number of wonderful sweeping shots of the Icelandic scenery. The film never fully explores any of its themes deeply enough, instead goofing around with its absurdly threatening and media-crazy postmodern setting and charming the audience with Polley's adorable performance and Burke's increasingly foul bitterness. Still, for what it is, as a light, breezy, bizarre comedy, No Such Thing is a fun, unique little film. You'd never see something quite like this come out of the mainstream, and any attempt at it would likely end up humorless and heavy-handed. This is pretty much Hal Hartley just having fun. Your mileage will vary, but I enjoyed it.

Mark L (fr) wrote: No doubt very important in the development of Dreyer, but his right-wing politics seem to have been right there from the beginning with him, and the cartoon villainy of the French and Russian revolutionaries gets a bit much after a while. 2 hours and 45 minutes of the same story, repeated over and over again, is also a litlle bum-numbing.

Eric H (it) wrote: Morality is easy in the absence of temptation. Some people never steal or cheat on a spouse simply because they wouldn't know how. But what if very suddenly (and accidentally) you fall into possession of a kidnapping or blackmail payoff --- and nobody knows? Lizabeth Scott simply excels in her role here. Her natural ability to come on to a man -- naturally -- sweetly -- using her entire persona but without being obvious, she has more ability to manipulate than most of us could deal with.TOO LATE FOR TEARS has it all: Murder, treachery, backstabbing, double-crossing, booze drinking, poison, and cigarette smoking --- all smoothly kept under control by a strong director and script. See it.
