(fr) wrote: While the movie does have some annoying quirks including the use of the meaningless moniker "Kiryu" for the character every Godzilla fan treasures as Mechagodzilla and a most improbable female heroine, it delivers in spades on the city stomping action and offers a nice twist in the story line involving use of DNA from the bones of the original 1954 Godzilla to build Mechagodzilla. With only a few exceptions, the effects are good. The more experienced actors deliver convincing performances. The final battle between the Big G and his chrome plated brethren is worth the wait.
(nl) wrote: "2001 - A Space Travesty" is mildly entertaining while it lasts and if you have absolutely nothing to do for 90 minutes and feel like a cheap laugh (with as little brains as possible) this is the movie for you. Otherwise it's a travesty indeed.
(ru) wrote: This movie is all kitsch, and that isn't completely bad. It has a simple tale to tell about the remake of a classic silent movie stumper that was one of the originals that was more about style over substance. So this movie drops a bit of style over the mundane matter of making a movie in France. But that is the catch, it is a contrast of the mundane and surreal inflection of style. It has an appeal, but nothing to be overwhelmed about. Maggie is good and the director and costume girl are good, but nothing seems to matter in this movie except the references to the old movie and how it seems to taint the mundane world. This movie just sort of sits there and points to good things while you stare forward.

(ca) wrote: Really nice find. Joel McCrea his usual amazing self. Plays a humble, charismatic white preacher in reconstruction rural southern town. The black actors don't act ridiculous. The Klan situation is addressed, albeit in a paternalistic, white-savior manner. But given the time, a decent step forward.

(nl) wrote: This was a very funny movie with many brillian bits from a variety of the funniest people in late 20th C. life (Chapman, Cook, Feldman, Kahn). Most of the actors are casually at ease with the time period of of the film and effortlessly send up both it and many modern pieties,. Graham Chapman's mad face with burning squibs in his beard, Peter Cook's treatment of a little girl, Cleese as Blind Pew, Madeline Khan's world-weary "Oi suppose you'll be raping me then"; Yellowbeard's basic response to every problem; Lieutenant Prostitute. Great humour is so lacking these day and this film is full of gems. The plot is an adequate framework for the performances. I wonder if the problem is that RT critics are Americans who may not get a lot of British humour & are unfamiliar with the period. As with most Brit-based Pythonesque productions, the writers know their history and are well-read. It's as good as Jabberwocky in its own way. The major flaw was inclusion of Cheech and Chong who don't belong at all and are genuinely not funny.
