If only the makers of Love Ranch had done the same. Helen Mirren may be British acting royalty (quite literally) but her performance here is jaw-droppingly poor. She's painfully miscast as Grace Bontempo, the aging brothel Madam who embarks on an affair with a younger man following news of impending ill health. Though I'm well aware that she's never shied away from risqu roles, I feel that at 65 years old she is now too old to be indulging in sex scenes. While I wasn't too bothered by the blossoming relationship between the two characters, it did overly stretch the limits of believability (which is ironic considering the story is based in truth) and the intimacy required of Mirren in certain scenes was uncomfortable viewing at best. Furthermore her command of the American accent was atrocious. Throughout the film she slips in and out, often reverting back to her English intonation during dramatic moments. Opposite Mirren, Joe Pesci plays her philandering husband, and does so with gusto, but he can't cover the fact that the story would have been a whole lot more interesting if it had made the most of its unique setting. Instead the brothel ends up being totally disposable, bearing little impact on the chosen narrative which focuses on the disappointingly generic older-woman younger-man love story. While I understand that the filmmakers are constricted by real events, this is not an excuse for wasting a great premise on an uninspired tale that builds to such a melodramatic, cringe-worthy conclusion. A number of subplots attempt to liven up proceedings, one of which involves Mirren's young lover trying to revive his fading boxing career. However even here director Taylor Hackford can't find his footing, and creates a ridiculously sensationalized boxing match that is both clichd and completely overblown. In a year where The Fighter is being lauded the best boxing movie since Rocky, this is quite unfortunate as it only highlights just how terrible the extended bout in Love Ranch is. Battling through the lackluster dialogue, the film misses chance after chance to comment on the issue of legalized prostitution, and instead ends in a laughably exaggerated manner which acts as a rather pathetic attempt at going out on a dramatic high. As such Love Ranch is a hugely disappointing film that is neither interesting nor sexy enough to ever live up to what could have been.

(nl) wrote: Carino, ma la moda del momento diluire le saghe letterarie il pi possibile per fare soldi, quindi il finale davvero aperto.Rispetto al primo capitolo, dove secondo me si era sottolineato poco il senso di oppressione nei vari distretti, finalmente in Catching Fire si intuisce meglio che c' una crescente ribellione in atto.Il film senz'altro girato bene e gli effetti speciali sono all'altezza della situazione, quindi questa storia Sci-Fi/Fantasy comincia a convincermi sempre di pi.Magari chi si innamorato dei libri, potr dare qualche giudizio in pi (e magari elargire un voto pi alto), ma io non posso andare oltre e purtroppo dovr attendere altri due film per vedere come andr a finire.
