(au) wrote: charming theatrical acting from bening, irons and gambon (dumbledore). it examines the fuzzy definitions of love, commitment, and dramatic comedy on stage (and who was it who said "the world's a stage, and each must play a part"? shakespeare perhaps, but elvis crooned it better -- and in this movie, bening plays it with passion)
(fr) wrote: Boring, uninteresting and slow. Not only that but the characters were very dull, undeveloped and the acting wasn't much good. Those are the biggest problems with this film, but overall it dosent have much going for it. The plot wasn't new and didn't hold much excitement, there was a brief car chase and fistfight but otherwise there was no action. The title is misleading, it sounds like a action gang type movie but isn't. The blood part of the title works, the wine part dosen't make much sense to me at all. I can't say I have anything really positive to say about it, it didn't fail in every aspect, but it did below average in all them.

(jp) wrote: The trouble with Hitchcock is that when he tries to do pure comedy it feels so forced, not at all like many of his best thrillers, which have some great natural comedy that emerge organically from the situation or from the witty personality of a character. No such luck here and so we are left with a comedy drama that has precious little comedy or drama; we don't even get Hitchcock usual inventive visual flourishes to give us something to find interesting. Instead we do get the small mercy of the beautiful background of Vermont and some often sweet romances but little investment in the titular mystery.
