Not especially optimistic, but does give you hope that if America ever changes its policy - however unlikely vested interests make that - the whole world would probably quickly follow suit.

Becs D (ag) wrote: Wow!!! Both the best film I'd seen for a while and possibly the most disturbing. I was hovering over the pause button all the way through due to the uncomfortableness of the storyline, but it's the bravery of the story telling and the uniqueness of the the tale that gives a voice to the unmentionable abuse that's suffered by many.

diana w (ca) wrote: feels like i'm watching another version of "BIG" minus tom hanks. it's a pretty good film with solid casts. i don't really like mary stuart masterson though. she doesn't quite hit the notch here. ryan o'neal is ryan o'neal, he's pretty much reprising his role in 'love story' (devoted lover minus the tears); alas not much to say. the one who's carrying this show is definitely cybill shepherd. i've never really cared much for her but she's definitely a looker in this film, regardless of her age. she also has that talent of drawing people in with her smile (a widow has never looked sexier). the character corinne jeffries definitely fits her. she has the knack of making the audience sympathize with her with just little effort on her part, and she can also make us understand why she makes that 'choice' in the end. robert downey is a bit over the top here, but i guess we can forego that since it is a COMEDY after all... overall, worth watching! and the ost 'after all' is definitely enchanting!
Ben L (mx) wrote: Comet is a strange movie to talk about, because if it weren't for the way it was presented it would probably be one of the most straightforward and uninteresting romantic dramas. The story is about a guy and a girl who meet, fall in love, and have a tumultuous relationship with one another. However the film takes their relationship and chops it up into a number of key moments and then bounces you around from one scene to another every few minutes. There's a lot of just talking between the 2 characters (they are practically the only 2 people in the entire film.). I thought Justin Long was very good at portraying this hyper-intelligent but socially awkward character. His blatant honesty creates the few humorous moments in the film. Emmy Rossum is charming, but also has a quirkiness to her which meshes very well with Long. I believe them as a couple, and that is vital to make this film even slightly successful. The thing that sets this film apart, though, is the strange sci-fi elements they add into the story. It's one of those films where they ask a lot of questions (or get the viewer to ask a lot of questions) but they are reluctant to give straight answers. So you are left hanging. Naturally, the lack of closure will excite some people who like to discuss and debate movies, but also annoy others who want a more simple ending. I fell somewhere in the middle, because I like the mental puzzle, but I don't know if it was interesting enough to warrant the strange visual effects and some other choices they made in the presentation. For instance, and I won't give away all the little twists in the plot, but one of the strange things is right at the beginning so I can at least mention the fact that this film takes place in a parallel universe. It's a strange choice to frame the story that way, because it's hard to see how that impacts the movie at all (although the idea of parallel worlds is mentioned later in the film.) I think Comet is a good film, but it needed something more to fully engage me and make me want to watch it again.
