Jay K (kr) wrote: The core story of this film is great. The writing lacks depth and is a bit childish especially for a rated-R film. The music is a somewhat corny and drowns out the actors and their lines quite a bit. I love Knoxville but it seemed like he was slightly out of his comfort zone as this character. Honestly this film would have went over much better as a children's film (minus the foul language and ill-advised jokes). The best part about this film was actor Rob Riggle. Even with the sub-par screenplay, Riggle gave me a few chuckles. All in all the movie seemed slightly half-assed but there was a somewhat feel-good conclusion to this movie and it is definitely worth the rent.

Walter M (ru) wrote: Narrated by Amy Goodman, "One Bright Shining Moment" is a documentary about former United States Senator and 1972 Democratic Nominee George McGovern, focusing on his antiwar politics. His 1972 campaign was seen as a ray of hope for a more participatory democracy.(McGovern headed a commission following the 1968 election which greatly reformed primary rules. Here, they are hailed as the savior of the Democratic Party but I seem to recall Eugene McCarthy grousing about them in one of his memoirs.) Along with archive footage and recent interviews with McGovern, testimony is also shown from the likes of Gloria Steinem, Warren Beatty, Howard Zinn, Dick Gregory, Gore Vidal and Jim Bouton(?!?). Also heard from is members of his 1972 campaign staff including Gary Hart. The documentary is less than thrilled with both Republicans and Democrats(but it still goes lightly on the Kennedy's), portraying McGovern as the last good man. While it is true that he is a genuine humanist and that many things would have been better if he had won(particularly with Chile and East Timor), I think it is incorrect to portray him as the only congressional opponent to the Vietnam War.(His sympathy is for both American soldiers and Vietnamese civilians.) I know the Vietnam War was the impetus for his campaign but the documentary spends too much time rehashing familiar information. Plus, some of the commentary veers on the irrelevant side. And Hunter S. Thompson is notable by his absence.

Zachary M (mx) wrote: Sometimes films have such a tumultuous production, the productions themselves become legendary. 2001, The Exorcist, Jaws, and the first Star Wars movie all come to mind. Fitzcarraldo is in that same league and this is the attempt to document it as it happens. Herzog has such a way of having his films have a dream or quirky feel to them, and either by design or not, this documentary takes that on. Though now a days it is probably most famous online for the memes it has sparked. But maybe that is just another burden of a man's dreams.

Joel A (au) wrote: Clint Eastwood once said 'I think during filming he was in a helutative state' on director Michael Cimino & the casual breezy story reflects it.In all ways a story of drifters & they failed attempts on getting ahead. Filled with wonderful side characters such as ass kissing Goodie & washed up George Kennedy. Both Clint & Bridges work really off one another & the comedy of the film I think really moves it forward, they are all such characters & it's fun to journey with them.Any easy watching Clint Classic.....

Douglas L (au) wrote: Martyrs is a ruthless sadistic film about the mental stability and balance one may acquire from long lasting tortures. The film is intense and is actually executed with a lot of technical skill. It looks good and is edited well. The pacing is also well thought out and structured nicely. The picture is vicious and demands very little thought. Violation of the viewer should not go without a point. The film makes an attempt at reaching some level of intrigue from a particular idea, however it is not presented in a way that justifies the violence as it intended.
