(nl) wrote: Not bad for a really low budget horror movie. Interesting that they managed to run almost the entire movie over the span of a drive...one in the trunk and the other behind the wheel. That's also what made it drag and get a little stale in parts. The ending was really sudden and not much of a payoff after the long ride...

(us) wrote: The first time I had heard about Lee Frost's The Thing with Two Heads was in a commentary track for an episode of Futurama. Some of the writers of that series were also writers to The Simpsons, which would explain why that show also made a reference to this film in one of its Treehouse of Horror episodes (number 2 I believe). So The Thing with Two Heads ended up being a film I included in this year's 31 Days of Halloween celebration. The premise, if you didn't know, is about a dying racist doctor, Maxwell Kirshner (Ray Milland), who has developed a procedure that allows the head of one living creature to be transplanted onto another living body. He has already perfected the procedure on a gorilla, and is now prepared to have the same done to himself. But after his sickness worsens, his doctors have to make a drastic decision and attach his head to the body of a black death row inmate named Jack Moss (Roosevelt 'Rosey' Grier), who is trying to prove his innocence. I guess it is safe to consider this film a blaxploitation movie, since it shares similar qualities. Jack could be seen as the down and out black guy struggling throughout the film, and Maxwell could be seen as "the man" who is trying to bring him down. It's just that the idea of Maxwell being on Jack's back all the time isn't a metaphor, he really is attached there! For a stupid film, The Thing with Two Heads is a lot of fun. The movie knows its premise is beyond silly, and it never takes itself too seriously. That opens up the film to some extremely funny situations. Like after the surgery when Jack escapes, he stumbles on a dirt bike rally and a chase ensues with some of the worst police car drivers I've ever seen. The character is a jerk, but I really liked that Maxwell Kirshner stayed racist throughout the film. As the story progresses, we get to know more about Jack Moss and see that he isn't the dangerous criminal that the justice system says he is. But Maxwell could care less, since he just wants a new body. It was an interesting on screen duo between the two of them, and a lot of fun to watch. The film ends on a slightly dark upbeat note (I know, oxymoron), and even features a few characters singing "Oh Happy Day" as they drive off into the sunset. The Thing with Two Heads is an odd little film, but still one of the better horror themed blaxploitation films I've seen. But be warned, if you do give this one a chance don't go into it with high expectations. This is a campy film, so be sure to be in the right mind frame if you decide to see it.
