Brandon S (au) wrote: If ever there were a film that makes me want to make films, it's Martin Scorsese's masterpiece HUGO. The combination of top-of-the-line visual effects with the soulful tribute to where film has been brought a tear to my eye.Scorsese is one of the few "old breed" American filmmakers left in the world, and I would argue that he's the very best in the world. His films typically pull from a certain vein: purely American. His films are about American culture, history, ideals, misgivings, blunders, etc. This is a universal picture that seeks to do one thing: make the kind of cinematic magic act that the great M (C)lis would have made himself, had he been given the technology we have now.

Derek B (nl) wrote: For a movie that says "one enormous action sequence after another" on the cover I was horribly disappointed. The action sequences are incredibly short and there was really only one that I thought was well done. The giant epic battle at the end got glazed over by narration and was only three minutes long. For a battle that lasted 100 days and 100 nights 3 minutes seems kinda short to me. Also I thought it kind of odd that a movie set in Asia about Asian tribes had two hispanic males in the lead roles. I have to believe that there were Asian actors who would have been willing to play these parts. On the good side thought the acting was solid, the plot was interesting and some of the scenery was downright beautiful. That doesn't make up however for the horrible fights scenes and the just over all lacking ability of this movie to keep me interested. If you are really into Asian culture this movie might be for you but if you just want action go watch Braveheart or Gladiator instead
