(gb) wrote: a very extraordinary comedy with dark shades of black humor and scarily frank sight of human beings and the way they deal with problems at the same time. and more than good in both ways .)

(br) wrote: Biography of Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas, this film follows his early starts then his exile from Cuba to the united states. It's very well shot by visual artist Julian Schnabel, well written & very different from most biographical films but it's an interesting film to watch.
(kr) wrote: I've read the critiques about this movie, and to be honest I'm not sure where all the antipathy stems from. The acting is really top notch (to be expected with such a good cast) and the visuals are beautiful, as many people have already noted all over the internet. But the real dislike people cite seems to be that it's a bad story, and I just don't agree. I think the story is engaging and exciting, the plot devices are a little shaky but no more so than your average hollywood production, and the character interactions are satisfyingly intense at times and very believable for a movie about dreams that tell the future. The ending feels tacked on, I will say that. It has next to nothing to do with the story, and feels more like a Friday the 13th wannabe finisher as opposed to a proper ending. However, the bulk of the story arc is not this nonsensical monstrosity some reviewers seem to think it is. This is NOT Nightmare on Elm Street, it doesn't even play like a horror. It's a little psycho thriller and a little drama, and on the whole extremely entertaining. The first time I watched this movie, I flipped on the TV and just left it on the channel the last person in my house had been watching. This movie just happened to be on, and with zero expectations I watched it and found myself feeling excited, anxious, frightened and sympathetic at all the right points. This is not a masterpiece, but very few films are. It seems to me like its got an unnecessarily bad rap, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. Maybe it was released at the wrong time, or marketed incorrectly, so people who went to see it were expecting something else. Bottom Line: I would recommend that people watch this if they're looking for a surreal, suspenseful, creepy, and visually appealing movie. Suspend your disbelief a bit in order to be immersed and you'll enjoy yourself. And don't expect a gore-fest horror spectacular, do that and you'll be disappointed.

(br) wrote: Was forced to watch this... I wish someone would say sorry to me.The loss of Ali MacGraw's life is the only thing that kept me from taking my own. The greatest concentration of BS I've ever witnessed. So contrived. "If you're going to make a serious tearjerker, somebody's got to die. It's in the handbook of romantic platitudes." The worst kind of attempt at emotional manipulation. Counter-cultural garbage, foisted by hypocritical Hollywood. Other than Ray Milland's performance & some music, an abortion of a movie.
(us) wrote: The secret to Dirty Harry's success is in the most famous part of the movies most famous quote. "Do you feel lucky?" Typically in cop dramas the good guy and bad guy take turns being in control of the situation and driving the plot forward. In Dirty Harry both the good guy and bad guy are imperfect. Both seem to stumble through the conflict. The sniper stumbles through the action scenes, while Harry stumbles because of his responsibilities as a police officer. The film begins in typical fashion with a sniper on a roof. His second attempt he gets spotted by a helicopter. That's when we know we're not in for a connect-the-dots kind of cop drama. The crime spree ends before it begins, and the rest of the movie is about what other action movies would sum up in the last 10 minutes. The villain is shamelessly wicked and very unusual. At times it has the atmosphere and musical score of a sleazy early 80's slasher movie. Harry is imperfect because he's an old school kind of cop with old school methods and he has a dark sense of humor that comes off as politically incorrect to people who don't him. Catching the criminal isn't the problem. The problem is bringing him to justice within the limitations of the law. Harry allows the black man at the beginning to be "lucky" because Harry knows the justice system will take care of him, but with the sniper justice isn't guaranteed. The word "lucky" is so significant because through the whole movie that's what the sniper used as a weapon. Luck saved him from harry each time. Luck got him off the hook because of a technicality. But ultimately, the snipers luck had no power over Dirty Harry Callahan.

(ag) wrote: Blood Work Starring: Clint Eastwood, Jeff Daniels Dir/Prod by: Clint Eastwood Blood Work, covers mystery/suspense in its limelight, it maybe immature to say that film is either good or bad, because we have most of elements of script to be well-placed. But, there is something missing, the actors chosen to play characters (as far as I believe). Clint Eastwood has put layout of script in genuine way, by hiding identity of the killer. By all chance, it can be regarded as worth-seeing movie.
