Talk about totally unbelievable... his voice is pubescent. BUT now that Matthew Broderick IS actually a middle aged man, the joke is on us. His nuts STILL haven't dropped. And so the conviction of Biloxi Blues is even stronger for me having watched it again after many years. Mike Nichols directs this film adaptation of Neil Simon's acclaimed play. Most of the cast from the stage show have reprised their roles and deliver really committed performances. It's a story about a group of young men and their time in a military boot camp. The protagonist is played by Broderick and he's a smart-ass joker who sees humour in all things. Playing against him is Christopher Walken as the psychotic drill sergeant. This is, in my opinion, one of Walken's best performances. He's really incredible. It's a great movie and what strikes me most about it is that the comedy is secondary to the drama. This is very much a coming of age story as it is a war film. There are all kinds of serious undertones throughout the film such as racism and homosexuality. It's sort of a mild version Full Metal Jacket. Curiously it is one part of a trilogy of films, the others I have never seen. I might look into that. =)
