Steve W (mx) wrote: Even Chow Yun Fat cannot save the movie with his magnetic star power. The same with the beauty of Yifei Liu, who narrates the film. Chow plays Cao Cao, and everyone wants him dead. The emperor, his own son, and a secret cabal that has raised assassins since childhood with one goal, to kill General Cao Cao. You'd think a movie with this much intrigue and subterfuge would be exciting, but is not. Barely anything happens in the movie, characters are present and they talk, but there's no action. There are two brief action sequences, might as well not even be there. Nameless soldiers fight assassins, there's no suspense or stakes and the movie fizzles out in a dull whimper. Despite its lush set design, costumes, and star power, The Assassins is a period piece misfire.

Samuel H (es) wrote: Better than the original Spy Kids 2 is hilarious. Here's the thing, you have to realize that the over the top corniness is intentional. If you were to attempt this type of humor with say more adult films (say a Quentin Tarantino movie) you would think it hilarious and masterful. Unfortunately, when the actors are kids and the plot is less graphic, people fail to understand the humor in it and instead attribute it to poor acting or an unintelligent plot line. But if you realize the intentionality of the overzealous tackiness you must then realize the wonder of it. In the dramatic zoom shots of a character's face, the characters say something that seems to be too commonly used in movies today. They say a catch phrase. But in this movie, those catch phrases are meant to come across as tacky. There is intentional satire. Also, the scene in which Juni and the President's daughter dance is one of the most hilarious moments in modern cinema. Seriously. With all that being said, that's not to say that Spy Kids 2 is some sort of masterpiece. It's not, by any stretch of the imagination. However, it is a dang good kids movie. And for that reason, it's a great watch.

Sean H (ag) wrote: As the director says, it's a movie about joy. Watch bodybuilders flood the street randomly and Jeff Bridges get drunk and dance like crazy while Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the fiddle.

Dave L (de) wrote: A complex plot, a variation on the original Yojimbo but with a heavy Zatoichi treatment......one thing that tantalizes me is the word "monster" as it was used by the character Yojimbo to describe Zatoichi, especially late in the film, per the subtitles. The spoken word *sounded* phonetically like "bogeyman" to me, but I can't verify it. Can a Japanese speaker help with this? Thanks!
