And who wants to possess above all is the Marquesa, a wealthy stranger who does not hesitate to use cunning Italian art dealer persecuted by the police and associated with the Russian mafia, to remove the seal from Juan de Dios. But neither the Marquesa, neither the Italian nor the Russian, not even the Spanish Police, known the capacity Juan de Dios and his men to mess things up and, incidentally, become involved themselves.

Chris T (gb) wrote: Was a bit plodding like previous reviews said- in fact true it could have been half an hour shorter. However, as someone who enjoys a good old fashioned mystery or solving a riddle I enjoyed it. Interesting story within a story, and combination of Victorian and modern eras- but you have to watch closely to get the most out of it. Jacobi and Jones are great, but aren't they always.

I am surprised that people can remain calm in such circumstances.

Thanks..."The Strangers" is one of those horror movies that mainstream audiences pretend to love just because they think it's a hardcore horror film. The killers toy around with the couple for about an hour for no reason, it just seems like a waste of time really. And it all leads to the last 15 minutes where they tie the couple up in chairs, and stab them a couple times... Then they leave and did not manage to successfully kill both of them. Great.

Justin A (ru) wrote: It's a fairly subpar movie, but goes off-the-walls in the last half hour and becomes something so much more. It's horrific, disgusting, and truly horror. I loved it. My only problem is that I find Brian Yuzna direction not to be that inspired. He's been involved with some great horror movies, no doubt, but I just can't help but wonder what a movie like Society would have been like with a director like David Lynch, Takashi Miike (although this movie was long before his popularity), or David Cronenberg. Still, Society is a must-see for fans of body horror movies or just want something disgusting and slimy.

Probably Melville's most hands-off film character-wise, but in terms of its construction I'd say it's very nearly to Melville what 'Rear Window' (to my mind) is for Hitchcock -- a kind of stand-in near-flawless representation of a filmmaker's genius. The movie runs like clockwork -- it winds on ceaselessly and tightens and tightens until the bell sounds for the admittedly miserable finale. 'Un Flic' makes its terms clear from the start (in true Melville fashion with the quote on ambiguity and ridicule) and delivers satisfyingly. It doesn't have the titillating cool of 'Le Samourai', and it lacks the dramatic flourishes of 'Le Cercle Rouge', but it's a totally underrated, nails-for-breakfast gangster movie from a master of the genre.
