Elsa & Fred

Aged, embittered widower, Fred learns to enjoy life thanks to his elderly yet vibrant neighbor, Elsa. Upon learning Elsa is terminally ill, Fred takes her to the Fontana di Trevi in Rome in order to reenact her favorite scene from ‘La Dolce Vita’.

"Elsa and Fred" is the story of two people who at the end of the road, discover that it's never too late to love and make dreams come true. Elsa has lived for the past 60 years dreaming of a moment that Fellini had already envisaged: the scene in 'La Dolce Vita' at the Fontana di Trevi. The same scene without Anita Ekberg in it, but with Elsa instead. Without Marcello Mastroianni but with that love that took so long to arrive. Fred has always been a good man who did everything he was supposed to do. After losing his wife, he feels disturbed and confused and his daughter decides that it would be best if he moves into a smaller apartment where he ends meeting Elsa. From that moment on, everything changes. Paul Giamatti continues to be one of my favorite unsung actors of Hollywood, tackling this quirky little film in a way that few other actors could have pulled off. In a strange way, this movie feels like the way I imagine Giamatti to be: A little dark, thought-provoking, questioning, just on this side of spiritual and very intriguing. It reminded me both of "Stranger Than Fiction" and "Being John Malkovich."

Matt V (gb) wrote: Such a sad, moving story. The acting was great all around. Very good.

Siddharth S (br) wrote: It started off as a streetsmart movie. Ran well most of the way. The ending left me unsatisfied. It built up really well. And another example of a plot device well used.

Joel A (it) wrote: A very thinly plotted film with some great songs & gorgeous scenery. I can see why this film is the hit that it is, it's very showy & pure escapism. The was a thin story line of Head Nurse falling for a french man on a island of the South Pacific and his input against the Japs to aid the war.I found the film enjoyable but not really meaningful with over long songs that could have been more plot, a fun splashy musical.
