William C (mx) wrote: Grade: 7.5/10Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa is a comedy return for Alan and this time heappears on the big screen. The movie is funny, not side splitting kindof humour but the smart jokes and wit more than make up for this withchuckles spread out everywhere. Whether or not this will please fans ofPartridge is one thing that is important about this, I believe it willbut of course there is only one way to find out, go watch it.Now Steve Coogan not only plays classic old Alan with his legendaryremarks and basically the same old stuff we expect(but funnier maybe),he also helps write the script. Yes the film is very well written and Icouldn't find much wrong with it to be fair, it may be that thedirecting or acting slightly makes this drop, but the script hasnothing to do with that, it is just so well done and the collaborationon it is fantastic. Now is this film great?, well no not really in my opinion although Idid find it a good piece of comedy and one as I mentioned, that shouldplease hardcore fans. It should also very much please those whoconsider themselves fans of slightly more slick comedy, a more Britishtype of humour in which the jokes are fast and present, but if your notlistening you might miss the reference etc. But anyway what I'm tryingto say is this is just good and smart, a good mixture overall.A point I very much did like about this is the casting, not necessarilywho they chose but I loved that the whole cast are kind of low key andall British and Irish actors usually from TV. It gave this a whole newsense of realistic comedy because you don't always know the actorinvolved and even if you do not so well so it seems much more originaland shows that with the right people behind the helm, any cast can begood. Now a lot of credit goes to Armando Iannucci who comes in again towrite this(among others including Coogan) to create that air tightscript and bring Partridge to the big screen in a very well done way.Now to be honest the world of DJ's is hardly the most exciting ofworlds to explore, but that is what makes this so good, it rips off theclich way in which radio DJ's do it and then adds a plot like this andmixes it together and makes it just plain funny.Another key to watching this is to hear Partridge out, or even hearCoogan out as sometimes he talks just a little too fast and the voicehe puts on is not always the easiest to hear, but if you focus a lot onhim, you will laugh your head off. Some of the quick little one two'sinvolved are gold and really show yet again that this character andothers can work on the big screen very well indeed.Overall as I have mentioned a good movie overall for me and onealthough not touching greatness, is still tip-top. It's the kind ofmovie that for me personally I won't maybe remember it forever or seeit as great ever, but still is a piece I could revisit one day becauseof the evenly laid humour that runs through every single scene of thismovie. The big screen does nothing to harm Alan Partridge and I do hopethat we can see more not only on TV, but in cinema as well.

Justin A (de) wrote: Not the most original movie, especially coming only a few years after very similar movies like The Terminator and Highlander. But what keeps the movie interesting despite an unoriginal plot is the strong acting by the main three characters. They all do a good job with the roles. The only minor complaint I have as it considers the acting though is Lori Singer later in the movie. The ditzy, California girl act was likable the first half, but it kind of wore off towards the end. It became a bit annoying when they were in the cemetery having to dig up pages of the book, only for her to be taking her precious time and freaking out for having to touch a dead body. A 300 year old, barely still a skeleton dead body. I can understand people being squeamish, but the fate of the entire universe lies in getting the damn pages ten feet away onto consecrated ground and she's diddling around because she doesn't want to touch a skeleton. Actually, the bigger problem would be her character taking an unnecessary turn halfway through. Early on in the movie she is cursed to age twenty years every day, but she breaks the curse about halfway through the movie. I understand the bigger threat was the fate of the universe, but doesn't our characters have some vulnerabilities make them more interesting? The curse should have been broken at the end of the movie when they stopped the warlock. It was just kind of odd and made the second half a bit less interesting because of that. Overall though, no real complaints about this one. It was fun and entertaining. Not a classic masterpiece, but enjoyable nonetheless.
