He has created a veritable inkblot through which we can know him, intimately - & I read into it that I wouldn't have liked him before the accident, & that if he fully recovered, I wouldn't like him, again. Harsh, but that's not the only thing that made this film anticlimactic & as rigid as a toy soldier, for me.

David D (au) wrote: A slow moving psychological drama -- not at all a vampire film as implied by the cover art. Quite engrossing but far too slow to truly be a thriller, let alone a horror thriller.
Jason D (gb) wrote: Pervert! is an attempt at being a modernized Grindhouse film combining elements of comedy, horror, and late-night skinemax sex romps, which would lead people to either really love or really hate this movie for being so bizarre and all over the place. A college student, James, goes home to work on his father's desert ranch where he discovers that his father now has a young, slutty girlfriend (pornstar Mary Carey who doesn't stray far from what she knows) and has become an artist, excelling in stinky meat sculptures. Amidst all of the loud sex, hard work, and massive amounts of titty, ass, and bush shots. Well, naturally, Carey's character gets horny for the son and lots of fucking ensues. When they're caught by daddy, he goes berserk and then Carey's character disappears. The son starts to suspect foulplay, especially when a new girlfriend is brought home and she too is killed mysteriously. Now the son and a psychiatric nurse try to find out if his dad is the killer, but what they learn is far more ridiculous and obscenely funnier. Kudos to the makers of this film for trying to create something unique out of a pile of dung and raunch. It's about half and half with the jokes going well and falling flat, but the titty and sex quotient far exceeds many other sex comedies out there. This film is purely for fans of Grindhouse films, sex comedies, and trenchcoat films. It only makes sense that this film is dedicated to Russ Meyer who provided us with many similar films.

Although this film distances itself from the happy, naive and joyful musical movies made in the Golden Years of Mexica cinema, it still lacks the cynicism of later productions. The best thing of the film is Macario himself: he speaks little, but we know that behind those eyes, a lot is going on. Roberto Gavaldon engineered a jewel out of Traven's very short book; Igancio Lopez Tarso made a classic with this quiet character, and I was amazed to find in Pina Pellicer one of the most beautiful women in Mexican movies. It is sad to see movies like this are no longer made. Mysticism has no place in Mexican cinema right now (with a few... quite a few, and I mean quite a FEW -near to NONE- exceptions)

Dave S (mx) wrote: One of my all-time favourites. The performances by Nicholson, Hunt and Kinnear are just simply outstanding; award-worthy, in fact, and surrounded by a solid supporting cast. Well written with developed characters. A movie about the psychology of understanding people. Every time I watch it I feel a little bit better about my dysfunctional self. It touches me every time I watch it.
