End of the Harvest

End of the Harvest

An atheist philosophy club at a college harasses a Christian, Scott, who claims to have inside knowledge of when the world will end. To vindicate himself and "defeat" the athiests, he prepares a presentation based on a bible study he finds in the library. Although initially confident, Scott begins to have doubts due to the theoretical nature of the study. Meanwhile, his buddy Matt (who is having prophetic dreams of his own) is frustrated because he feels Scott is uprepared for the presentation and that the responsibility will fall on him to bail his friend out.

We have the band - David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Jerry Harrison and Chris Frantz - plus several very talented backing singers and musicians. The Talking Heads offshoot, the Tom Tom Club (Weymouth and Franz, plus backing musicians), also performs a few songs. This is Talking Heads at their peak, creativity-wise and popularity-wise. Incredible concert - the band seemed to be having a whole lot of fun and the music is fantastic. There is also the stage theatrics, largely by frontman David Byrne, and these amount to performance art.The only concert films that surpass this, I think, are The Band's The Last Waltz and the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration.

Jason B (fr) wrote: If you are not familiar with Terrence Malick I whole-heartedly recommend that you make the time. Days of Heaven is his sophomore film after Badlands. It tells a story similar to the story of Abraham and Sarah in the Bible. Bill and Abby, played by Richard Gere and Brooke Adams are two unmarried lovers who travel to a farm in search of work in the breadbasket in 1916. To remain together while on the job they pretend to be brother and sister which work fairly well until the owner of the farm, Sam Shepard, falls in love with Abby. This melodrama is something that typically turns me off and it would have here were it not for Malick's ability, along with DPs Nestor Almendros and Haskell Wexler, to capture one of the most beautiful mid-west films I have ever watched. Every single shot gave something special and almost unique (which is troublesome when filming in a wheat field). I can hardly recommend Days of Heaven enough.

Jake Z (kr) wrote: Certainly gorgeous to behold, featuring sumptuous cinematography, a one-of-a-kind score, and vibrant period settings. The performances are also striking, but it is Ronan who steals it, and Redgrave who leaves a lingering impression in her one scene. Unfortunately, as striking as the set-up is, and that first hour is indeed wonderful stuff, the central doomed romance is too undernourished for the tragedy to have any lasting impact. Because of this, Atonement is a technical marvel, but the heart and soul is robbed a bit.
