Ken S (us) wrote: Warren Beatty hasn't made a film in 15 years, and hasn't directed one since 1998's "Bulworth," only acting in one film since that feature. His return behind the camera (and in front) is a rather mediocre romantic comedy/drama with Beatty turning in a decent performance as the older and crazier version of the mysterious real-life billionaire and recluse, Howard Hughes. Hughes is good fodder for movies, because he is such a strange character, a man who was charismatic, eccentric, and a major public figure in his younger days that disappeared from the public eye as his own mental illnesses took hold of him. As Martin Scorses already made a pretty good film about Hughes younger days and his early descent into his OCD and mental decline, Beatty could've actually made an interesting film about his later years as a billionaire recluse with paranoia and clear mental issues that has no one to tell him no...based on his performance here, he might've done a good job of it. But he shoe-horned in a romantic plot-line that is vastly less interesting, with stars that a likable enough but don't have much to them, and Beatty's version of Hughes ends up as a strange backdrop to the whole thing. Just seems like he relegated himself to the background when he is playing the most interesting character. The film might've even worked if it was focused less on the romance, and more on the people working under Hughes fulfilling his increasingly strange demands. A shame, just ends up a bit of a hollow experience in the end.

Thomas T (fr) wrote: Sincere and heartfelt, this little gem will tug at your heartstrings. This film is director Anthony Chen's debut , but it is executed with such fitnesse one cannot tell just by watching the film alone. A conscious lack of music allows the acting and characters to really shine--- the former never stilted or cheesy (a common problem in local singaporean films) ; the latter very believable and connectable. From the retro kitchen tiles to the cassette tapes in Teck's old car, the movie paints a vivid picture of life in the 1990s, without explictly stating it. The director gives the audience freedom to wander, infer and to truly feel, on their own--not just about time and setting, but also the relationships and nuanced emotions of the characters involved. The camera work also deserves praise as many shots are cleverly done and lighted. The main story is simple, like a home cooked meal. But like a home cooked meal, it is precious and close to the heart.....I found myself laughing but also really close to tears at certain parts. Growing up in 1990s Singapore, many facets of the movie resonated very strongly with me. But at its core it is a universal human story of love and longing, of growing up and painful goodbyes. The movie will creep up on you, sweep you into it, and hit hard on the emotions.

Sean C (mx) wrote: It is a CRIME that not one critic here at RT has reviewed this film! It is an amazingly interesting documentary on the superstar professional skateboarder Christian Hosoi. Christian was one of the best vert ramp skaters ever before the sport changed and drugs and jail stalled his career. He was so good that even in Tony Hawks prime he and Tony would battle to see who would take first place at vert ramp competitions. Sometimes it was Tony but sometimes it was Christian. I am somewhat biased because I was huge into skateboarding when he was in his prime but I also can tell an excellent documentary and this is one. RT critics and members alike need to see this to see for themselves how good it is.

Nick A (ru) wrote: Not bad for fans of the first hour, but it's too long and without a good link inbetween the stories. I also missed a bit of character, where everybody here was as flatlined as it gets.

Peter P (kr) wrote: Interesting character driven movie about a guy who loves brids a lot too much and his best friend who keeps getting dragged into his crazy schemes, and then the war happens and more craziness ensues and then a mental hospital, and then, a lot of sitting.

Michael H (nl) wrote: Newman gives an excellent performance, assisted by a terrific supporting cast, including George Kennedy, outstanding as the unofficial leader of the cons who yields first place to Newman. Strother Martin(TM)s camp chief is chilling, a firstrate characterization.

Phillip E (ru) wrote: This movie is absolutely terrible. It is not worth watching because you will be bored to tears.
