This was a flagship issue of mine in college and haven't really thought about it since the Beijing Olympics. This film deals with the Yangtze River in the context of up-and-coming capitalism and the westernization of China as a whole. Not a great documentary but a very good one with an extremely important subject matter. A must see!

Alex V (mx) wrote: An absolutely enthralling documentary behind the making-of the film "Fitzcarraldo", directed by German director Werner Herzog. Remarkably telling the sometimes insane story of making the film on the rivers of the Amazon in northern Peru, we follow Herzog and his crew as they attempt (and mostly fail) throughout production. Tensions run high in the rainforest and we learn a great deal about the hardships, about Herzog as a filmmaker, and about the various native cultures indigenous to the area. Extremely intriguing and interesting, highly recommended.

Sean H (de) wrote: This movie has me torn. The first ten minutes own, the 20 minutes following bore me to tears, especially after repeated viewings. Once Snaporaz gets to the Phallic Mansion, things pick up immensely. The scene where Snaporaz wanders the hall of conquests is one of my favorite Fellini scenes ever. Unfortunately, a good deal of what follows is just not that interesting. I'm not sure what rating to give. 4 stars seems appropriate.
Calum R (au) wrote: This was the film that made David Fincher who he is today, sure 'Alien 3' may have been his debut, but after being somewhat considered a flop in most parts, it wasn't until his second venture into film that he became an integral part in modern filmmaking. 'Seven' is an uncontrollably grim and shocking thriller featuring fine performances, stunningly gritty cinematography and a haunting score. Brad Pitt, who was primarily know for soppy rom-coms and heartthrob movies was a rather unusual pick for a neo-noir thriller, but his performance is utterly fantastic and was one of the first to allow him to delve into serious drama, then Morgan Freeman, who had just came from the set of 'The Shawshank Redemption' yet again blows away the audience with another fantastic performance, but despite these two strong leads, it's really Kevin Spacey that's the big showstopper, his appearance in the film is limited, yet despite this, his creepy performance is what gave the film the notoriety it has, well that and the utterly gripping and shocking finale. Fincher's following ventures, 'Fight Club', 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' etc, all became possible due to this 90s gem.

Robert B (ru) wrote: I think this was the worst movie that I watched this year...plot about an asteroid that will crash into Earth, but in realitty is a UFO. Terrible actings, terrible effects, weak actings...it is a shame that anyone accepted to this trash movie. The top moment to me: in a city being dizimated, the soldier is on the side of a building, trying to be sneeky - on the reflection of the glass panel behind him we see people strooling normally on the street. Avoid at all costs! 1,0 / 10,0

Simon P (us) wrote: Has a solemn atmosphere, a depressingly slow pace and minimal scripting but this is a gripping film, it's also beautifully shot and framed throughout. Writer/director/star Rafi Pitts seems a man of few words. However, his images capture a real sense of isolation and his moody central performance depicts a desperate hopelessness which enhances the tone of the story.
