Chantal B (ru) wrote: I'm going to admit it: as a kid, when I saw the poster for this film, I was excited. I was a fantasy nerd who hadn't seen that many good fantasy films, and the premise excited me. I liked the idea of a fantasy with an middle-aged custodian at its heart, rather than a plucky youth or bulky action hero. I didn't see the film until a few nights ago, a space of nearly 10 years. That meant there was time for a second film, my idea of what the film might be like, to grow in my head. Ultimately, like many things, I cherish this Me-version of the film. It's not developed in the slightest, but it resonates with hope. After seeing the film, I am confused. I deeply appreciate this original attempt at a film, an urban fantasy bedtime story aimed at adults. It has few peers in that slim genre. To me, there are two things at war with this story. The amazing acting talent of Paul Giamatti, shaping a great and likable protagonist, and the blundering ego of the director, who constantly endangers the suspension of disbelief to mock the critics who, at this point, hadn't even turned on him yet. Lady in the Water would've been a great short story, and I'm convinced it would have been a good film. If only someone other than Night had torn his precious idea away from him to cut his ego and the plot down to size. That said, looking back on my memory of the film, I'm surprised to find it's a good one, happily sitting next to my 10 year old anticipation. Watching it may not have been the best way to experience the story - ideas of it continue to be engrossing.

Dave H (jp) wrote: Has to be one of the worst mainstream movies ever made, starting with the dialogue and actiing and lensing. Really awful, objectively, but there's a lot of fun to be had in watching this with drunken friends and laughing at the overall campiness and cheesiness. And there's also a lot of fun to be had watching Roberts prance around in that bikini-loincloth getup...

Eric L (ca) wrote: Disjointed, surreal, and ambiguous, just like the Ancient Roman book, this is one of my Top 10.

John M (gb) wrote: Frankenstein is an astronaut and a robot. He has to fight a space monster that's mostly made up of an old gorilla suit. He has to stop Nadir (remember Shecky from It Came from Hollywood?) and his alien queen from abducting bikini-clad women. He has to put up with a goofy soundtrack made up of wannabe pop songs that suck really bad. What's not to love?

Zach M (gb) wrote: This was an alright sex comedy from the 80's starring Johnny Depp and Rob Morrow. It had enough nudity for the type of movie it was trying to be. The humour was really over the top, with most of it feeling slapsticky. Lots of attractive women in bikinis and some decent jokes helped keep you interested to the end.
