The acting is great, the film is beautifully done, nice to see Dervla Kirwan, Colin Farrell and Alicja Bachleda. The little girl played by Alison Barry is an essential part of this movie. What I liked about the film was its ending- once its nice to see a film that ends like this. That its not all crying, tears, alcoholism and whatever. That the myth is not destroyed by ultra-"realism" but the film sort of opts for optimism. I liked it. Alicja Bachleda was great, too. Ok, so why not give it five stars? Well.. I sort of would have liked it even more had it a bit more edge. I'm not saying this is a disney movie for children because its not, but its a bit softer and less complicated somehow than life. It was a bit like watching a family movie. Not that its a bad thing. Its really well filmed.

Bob M (jp) wrote: A very entertaining documentary that delves into the word of competitive Scrabble. This is much more than a parlor game played with family members. It is a way of life. It is something to be lived and breathed. It is serious business. Meanwhile, the personalities of the contestants make for very entertaining viewing and the movie does not drag at all like some documentaries. For better or for worse, I actually knew the 3rd ranked player in the last state I lived and most of this story is authentic based on his stories. Who knew there are people who know every 7 letter word in the English dictionary? As you can tell from my reviews, I still struggle with the 3,4 and 5 letter words.........

Jacob F (ru) wrote: Alex Cox may have been the most successful filmmaker to adapt the energy and tone of punk rock and this is his most "punk" film (and could be seen as a conscious attempt to make a film parallel to The Clash's Sandinista (Joe Strummer does the film's very odd score)). And like that album you either think it's overblown and lousy, or ballsy and brilliant. This is a delirious and damning look at American imperialism, and it makes no effort to hide the fact that it is as much about Reagan-era Central American policy as it is about William Walker. One of the more adventurous films of the last quarter-century, backlash from critics and studios over this film essentially ended the career of one of the great directors of the 80's. It takes a while to get the tone, which is as much mid-career (the less funny) Mel Brooks as it is early Bunuel. As relevant now as when it was made.
VJ B (nl) wrote: Dana Andrews cheats on his wife, but it's okay because she's such a ditz, and he's totally noble with his doing pro-bono cases for Japanese-American war veterans, and it's okay when he holds his mistress down and forces a kiss on her, too, because he's just so darned in love with her! If only he wasn't so passionate!
Tony P (de) wrote: Aside from the rich dialogue and a few scenes of genuine sentiment, this film was pretty lame. The story starts out cool enough, with mobsters and murder and the devil, but it abruptly transitions into a backward adaptation of It's A Wonderful Life with family comedy and slapstick. The acting was solid though. This is the first film I've seen with Paul Muni, and I enjoyed watching him. Claude Raines has done better work, but he was still awesome. I think the greatest flaw is that this kind of movie has been vastly improved upon many times since. Plus when screenwriters fictionalize the supernatural or the unknown it usually turns out to be a laugh. For instance, Hell has a system and a process. It's just reaaallly hot and mundane, which apparently is eternal agonizing torture. Ending was ridiculous.
