Rania A (au) wrote: WARNING: This is not a film to watch if you are feeling low or happy, as it can bring your mood down with the content. I thought this was a real hard hitting, thought provoking, emotional drama. This film gives an insight into how and why people bully, and, the sometimes tragic consequences it can have. Normally i can sit through emotional dramas without too much of a reaction, but it seemed so real, as it is happening, every second, all around the word. I welled up a few times and, at some points, even cried, which is an unusual reaction from a film for me. I rate this film highly and would recommend to most, mainly to teenagers and adults as i feel the content is too much for a younger audience.

Li K (mx) wrote: it gets an extra star for having good looking, talented actors. But it was a crap movie when it came out 20 years ago, and it's still a crap movie when it's the best thing on tv because it's only competing with the Olympics and golf.

Hayley K (de) wrote: One of those rare films where the remake is actually better. This original film has no respect for women or understanding of what rape does to a woman. I can't imagine any woman who was raped consenting to sex with her attacker in her effort for revenge. Insulting.

Mike L (fr) wrote: Set during the Civil War, Cooper (Jess) and his family, the Birdwell's, play a group of Quakers in Pennsylvania. Quakers are a religious group but that does not mean they are a boring lot as we see within the first 15 minutes of the movie. First of all there is an obstinate goose that likes to chase the young Jess Jr., second Jess character likes fast horses, much to the consternation of his wife (Dorothy McGuire). One of the great scenes in this movie is the dichotomy of the different religions; we see singing and many colorful outfits in the Christian church while in the Quaker place of prayer the outfits are all in black and grey with everyone wearing hats and bonnets and there is no singing and the congregation is segregated. Differences in religion are sure to cause a major debate but when looked at empirically it is remarkable to see the similarities. For instance the similarities between the Muslims and Quakers is how they dress, in private they dress in a comfortable fashion while in public they dress very conservative. The scenes at the fair are touching and humorous while remaining respectful at the same time, in fact it puts a very good light on the Quaker religion in that the wholesome way is the way to go. The story is perfect, and first and foremost it is a love story and the best example of that is the straw on the back of Jesses shirt as he talks to Sam (Robert Middleton). One of the great scenes is the "race" between Jess and Sam with "his" new horse. The respect of religion and a persons beliefs is observed, except at the beginning when the Union Officer comes into the Quakers place of prayer. The drama of a freed black man, which the Quakers belief is upheld as a free person, and their own son wanting to go to war is a great dramatic plot, one that only a great director and cast can deliver. We feel what a mother must feel if she thinks her son has died in war, no more so than at this instant with a family who has their religious beliefs changed by a country who believes in violence more than any other country.
