Brandon W (jp) wrote: I've heard high praise from this documentary which from the the title, it got me curious, but also worried from what the movie would show. The Act of Killing is the most disturbing documentary I've seen which I know that people would find hard to watch. When the people were talking about how they killed a lot of people and what they get in return, it's very unsettling to listen to. When they reenact killing people and hearing the other people suffer for it, it's one of the most disturbing parts of the documentary and I had a hard time looking at the screen during it. The interviewers are really interesting even though it's not one of those kinds of documentary movies that do it like that, which I really like. The history behind it is really creepy, and it's surprising how it's pretty much legal to kill in that country. The Act of Killing is one of those films that you have to see to believe, and even when I couldn't look at the screen at times, it never took me out of the movie and just find it compelling.

Deb K (br) wrote: I found this movie to be quite good. Made in England. The acting and the story line were good. I would recommend this if you are browsing for a thriller.

So there was some budget. ~ It's not fun to recommend something so ultimately heavy, but it's well done with ample complexity. The bully problem-issue is shown, in this case, to be less than a straightforward matter, especially in the hands of youth. Usually a bully only understands a bigger bully. And that might've worked here except for ... (No Spoiler!) ~ Likely a festival winner.

Jc E (gb) wrote: Like the film Spotlight I saw last year, this classic political film demonstrated yet again that the pen is mightier than the sword. These films cannot emphasise enough how important it is for free democracies to have free press to be the watch dogs of the governments or any ruling bodies such as the Vatican and their cardinals. Freedom and independence of press alone are not enough but also the need of good investigative, responsible journalism. Eager journalists of Washington Post acted by Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman vetted by wise and experienced editors exposed the Watergate scandal of Nixon who merely acted on Machiavelli principal of doing whatever to stay in power. In his case, to spy on his political opponents. The scandal painted the Republicans in a very negative light. But are the liberal Democrats saints in comparison? Absolutely not and the press is not impartial in the dirt they uncover. One really wonders if the Washington Post would have been just as zealous to witch hunt Nixon if he was Democrat. In any case, a free press is a necessary pillar in all good advance democracies because if we have learnt any thing from history, it is all in power such as the US government or cardinals in the Catholic church, will become corrupt even if they weren't in the beginning.
