(kr) wrote: This film will appeal to people on the political left who share the protagonist's disgust with the policies of the Bush administration. It starts off promisingly, and remains engrossing with some real sparkle for the first hour or so. Unfortunately, the story then degenerates into maudlin nonsense, in fact incorporating many of the familiar cliches associated with boilerplate romantic comedies. John, the activist moving to Canada in protest of Bush's reelection in 2004, is sometimes irritating but his character is reasonably believable. Chloe, however, is poorly developed as John's complement/foil. Her motivations remain fairly murky, and her tag line, that John "runs away from his problems" is obviously disingenuous, since she is "running away" herself. The movie is further flawed by its sometimes insulting treatment of Canadian culture. Overall, the film develops an interesting subject to a point, and then, sadly, loses its way.

It's clear the guy wants to branch out, but this ain't the movie to do so as this, just like the gang in question, is a terrible choice to involve himself with. The movie as a gritty drama misses the mark by some margin as it almost feels like a Hollywood writer penned it after reading half an article on angry burly football fans beating the crap out of each other for no good reason other than they are mindless thugs that happen to support another club. The plot is lazy, exploitative, and so far from any sort of reality that I almost expect to see flying monkeys swoop over head. If anyone from overseas is shocked by this movie then don't be, as it is total claptrap right down to the fake cockney accents and its ridiculously contrived story.

(de) wrote: The cinematography for this film was amazing. It captured the mood of the town quite well with its dark and morose backgrounds and snow falls. Ethan Hawke was not too bad either but Max von Sydow stole every scene he was in. Richard Jenkins is very underrated and this film was one of the first ones that I have seen him in and he was good as the sheriff. James Cromwell's character could have had a bigger role but still solid acting all around. Excellent film and very underrated. Also, read the novel too.
